Chinese Defense Industry Ripping Off Russian Technology

» by in: China

You just got to love how the Chinese are ripping off the Russians:

China now competes with Russia in lucrative international arms markets by offering Russian knock-offs at bargain prices, or, without the onerous restrictions often imposed by Moscow. “Chinese manufacturers are producing either more completely indigenous advanced weapons systems or more defense technologies, sub-systems, and other essential components that Chinese manufactures can insert directly into foreign-made systems.”

Chinese firms adroitness at reverse engineering foreign technology is well known. A case in point: the Chinese built J-11B fighter. Russia gave the Chinese the designs to the Sukhoi-27 fighter in 1995 after the Chinese agreed to purchase 200 kits to produce it under local license. In 2004, after building 100 planes, the Chinese cancelled the contract for the remaining fighters, claiming they no longer met Chinese requirements. Soon after, the knock off J-11B began appearing for sale on international markets.  [Defense Tech]

You can read more at the link, but the Russians were foolish to sell any advanced weaponry to the Chinese in the first place knowing how they reverse engineer everything sold to them.

I'm guessing they use lead free paint on those fighters.

It is a pretty kick ass British racing green.

Makes you wonder if foreign companies should be eager to break into the Chinese market.

J-11B is available on international markets? Since when? My understanding is that J-11B is for the PLAAF only, not for sale on the international markets.

And what's wrong with reverse engineering? Of course the Russians would have liked the Chinese to keep buying these from them (yet they don't want to sell the best they have to the Chinese, for a good reason I guess). This is what sets China and India apart, China eventually builds its own after dissecting these Russian toys while India keeps on buying.

Did the former USSR really believe that the Chinese would not steal their Tecnology?

The Russian cosmonaut in Armageddon must have been wrong when he said. "Components. American components, Russian Components, ALL MADE IN TAIWAN!"

I think the same question must be asked from your government as well.

The Chinese practically stole all your military technology including the space shuttle via Chinese Americans.

At least the Russians got some money out of it.

Pictures of their space shuttle being tested were released in 2007. In any case, I'm guessing, like anything NASA does these days, 20 years after the initial deadline.

Name was the Buron. Late 80s. Flew unmanned. Was destroyed after the USSR "changed" it's name, when the hanger collapsed. Poor maintace.

Was nearly identical to ours, on the outside. Too bad it didn't compete with ours due to the collapse of the USSR. If it had, we might still have a viable space program next year. Instead of paying 56 billion per astronaut to Russia for a "lift" to the ISS next year.

    Pisses me off.

I heard a story awhile back that the US agreed to help Israel design an F-16-level fighter called the Lavi. Israel cancels with a couple prototypes already built. Sometime later, China decides to make its J-10 fighter, which has an eery similarity to the Lavi.

China and Israel denied involvement w/each other, but several Russian engineers on the J-10 project allege that Israel sold a prototype to China. Don't know if it's true, but wouldn't be too surprised if it was (and another reason not to sell Israel the F-22).

I'm talking about the Chinese shuttle Tom was referring to. I'd like to see it!

The Buran flew once… But that was USSR not PRC.

China never had a shuttle that I heard of. Sorry. Too focused on USSR.

The Russians were long noted for stealing western technology and making massive copies of junk look alikes. Now they sell the same to the Chinese who steal the technology again and make worse copies.

The only issue is the growing and eventual maturing of the industries that build the stuff. They learn as they grow and will someday produce top quality merchandise.

The Ruskies seem to be on the decline in this area, while the Chinese are moving up.

Actually, Retired GI, they do have a shuttle.

That's the thing, I'm not sure if the shuttle I mention above is real of fake.

    "…small unmanned Chinese air-launched space plane…"

Is not exactly what I think of as a shuttle, as in the US shuttle fleet, as in some of the most complex machines ever to fly.

I see a picture of the Soviet (Russian) shuttle "Buran" from the 80's. I see a story where more Chinese scientists are spies in the aerospace industry. No surprise there.

Where is the CHINESE shuttle you keep going on about. You do know the difference between the USSR (now Russian Federation) and PRC (China) right?

"…the Chinese are the sole hope of mankind’s dream of conquering the space."

How so? I think the Russians have them beat hands down. They have potential but they've done very little by comparison. Are you THAT racist?

You're right about the US losing dominance though and that is embarrassing but it's simply mismanagement not lack of technical ability. The NASA budget for the entire year amounts to the cost of 3 days in Iraq. Imagine what NASA could do with say, 15 days in Iraq funding.

Of course in the US we also have short sighted folks, who remind me of you, whining about spending the money "here where the problems are" instead of investing in the future.

Kinda funny … their copying stuff made from tech 20~40 years old. Just FYI, the F-16 class fighters are technically retired but we still keep some around cause of cost issues. Hell the Navy’s talking about replacing their F/A-18′s already. Between aircraft and missile tech, no other country comes remotely close to the USA.

We just flat outspend everyone on R&D.
