South Korea Gets Blown Out In World Cup Match to Argentina 4-1

I watched this game before heading off to work today and South Korea was clearly out of their class against Argentina despite showing some life after half time with Korea missing a sure goal that would have tied it up at 2-2.  The South Korean goalie I was not impressed by at all.  He seemed very slow compared to other goalies I have seen play during the World Cup.  Gonzalo Higuain may have had the hat trick, but I thought Lionel Messi was the best player on the field with the way he made everything happen for Argentina.

Go Argentina! I wasn't so happy that korea lost, so much as they didn't win. They take this stuff too seriously. On the good side, there was no one walking on Namsan last night.

I think the telling point was the 3rd goal. The korean goalie made the save but there was no one covering the net, except an Argentine player. The korean player near the net just stood and watched. Maybe contemplating having a smoke? Anyway, these kinds of mental errors cost the game. If the goalie goes out, rule 1 is that someone runs into the net. (from the goalie's team)

5,700 feet up, hard on the lungs, so endurance because a big factor. TD has it right, trying to play catch up takes a lot more energy than just playing keep away.

It was the coach's fault. For some reason he replaced Cha Du-ri on defense who was playing great, with somebody else who played like a scared girl. We have to get rid of the coach and replace him with someone else!

The Korean team played hard but there were just straight out classed. And I disagree with the OP, the Korean goalie was awesome. He did so many saves and blocks, but there is only so much you can do when the opposing team is dominating the field like that. Argentina's third goal had the goalie make the save, but with no teammates nearby to get the ball away. The Korean team couldn't keep ahold of the ball long enough to attempt many goals, and the goals they did attempt just weren't setup very well.

All in all a great game to watch, both teams were good and played hard, just Argentina's was better.

Strongly disagree that the ROK keeper Jung Sung Ryong was somehow unimpressive. I'd wager that you, sir, have never played the position before. He was besieged by a team dominated by a) strikers, b) arguably the best in the game, Messi, and did a fine job.

A lax Korean defense allowed shot after shot on goal, for the entirety of game. What about when Jung dived for the Messi shot that hit the post, and Higuain had a wide open goal to leisurely tap the ball into? Boemseok (I think it was him) was practically standing around watching.

In fact I can't remember him making a single mistake all night.

Didn't watch it, didn't care; just knew it was quiet in my neighborhood. No yelling, screaming from adjacent apartment buildings.

I think most people are still thinking of how well Korea was when they co-hosted the World Cup in 2002. The reason Korea did so well in 2002 was that they played every game in Korea. Had they beaten Germany they would have had to play in the championship game in Japan. If you can remember in the last World Cup in Germany they were eliminated in the first round. I wanted Argentina to win and win big just like they did just so it would be very quiet.

    Park Chuyoung finally scored…

SK played the first half too defensively, almost like they wanted to imitate NK's defense against Brazil (which was actually pretty decent). Second half was better, but it seemed like they gave up at the end, which was when Higuain(?) scored.

The high moment for the Koreans was probably when Lee Chungyong caught the Argentine defender sleeping at the end of the first half.

The question is now…can SK bounce back and play that game they played against Greece? Or will Nigeria finally win? (a win or tie for SK advances them, while a loss advances Nigeria)

Oh well…my favorite team (Netherlands) will move on undoubtedly

They started off with a strong defense, but you can’t expect to play defensively only against a team that has a strong attack without giving away a few goals (especially not with this ball, which is supposedly quite fast). Once the goals started going in, South Korea had to try to catch up. That’s physically draining, hence the extra goals near the end of the game.

I was and still am pulling for Korea. I think they have a good team. I hope they win the next one and move to the next round. I will be pulling for the USA tonight (tomorrow morning). I think they will advance.

North Korea just got beaten so badly by Portugal, my first thought was if anyone might be at risk of execution for humiliating the country.

I know President Lee will be particularly disheartened since he was reportedo be rooting for the North Korean Team against Brazil.
