Walter Reed Command Sergeant Major Stoney Crump Brought Up On Stolen Valor Charges

» by in: US Military

I saw this story about the stolen valor case involving a Walter Reed Command Sergeant Major in the Army Times last week, but the article didn’t say what the CSM did to get brought up on charges.  Via This Ain’t Hell here is a CNN link that explains what he did:

wramc csm

A  top military official at Walter Reed  Army Medical Center has been  relieved of duty and  charged with knowingly falsifying his personnel  records.

Command Sgt. Maj.  Stoney Crump, the senior  enlisted officer for the Medical Center Brigade, had  the “intent to  deceive” when he submitted a false official record incorrectly  stating  that he had attended several military educational courses, according to   the Army charge sheet.

Among the courses he  is alleged to have  attended were Reconnaissance School, Sniper School,; Drill Sergeant  Course,; U.S. Army  Ranger School and several Special Forces schools and  courses, the Army  charge sheet says.

Crump is also charged   with falsely stating in a biography he was a registered nurse. Other  charges  say he knowingly wore up to fifteen service ribbons and awards  he was not  entitled to wear, including a Marine Corps Combat Action  ribbon and a Presidential  Unit Citation, which is awarded for a  extremely meritorious or heroic act,  usually in the face of an armed  enemy.

In 13 separate counts,  Crump is charged under two  different sections of the Uniform Code of Military  Justice. This opens  the door to a possible court martial proceeding.  [CNN]

You can read the rest at the link, but this guy began his stolen valor activities starting in 2007.  I don’t understand how this guy thought he could get away this?  He didn’t think anyone would notice 15 service ribbons just pop up on his uniform and service records?

What's that saying Forest Gump's mama taught him…

    "Stupid is as stupid does."

And that's exactly why I don't believe we've heard the whole story GI. There's no way someone's going to just come in and drop a request to their S1 to add 15 ribbons/awards to their ERB/ORB. And the Army Times story had everyone saying he wasn't that kinda guys and was very understated. This is like holding up a bank and then having the stupidity to go buy a Lambroghini with cash the next day. People notice stuff like that and most CSMs aren't that stupid. I'd like to hear how this plays out…

    What, another one??

It's the nature of the American psyche to blow up his personal image by saying he fought in wars he never fought in, saying how brave he was. Playing soldiers in fantasy land, is a national hobby.

Tom, I agree also. No reason to defend a piece a chit like that. :x I knew a few when I served. Talked a good game and looked "pretty" in their uniform. A paper Professional.

Stoney Crump was a fake as a 1SG, he went beyond his way to look better than any one in the company, he made sure his NCO's lived the NCO creed, but could not even then live the same values. On several occasions this man's pride landed me in his office, I was a young NCO then but always reflected to his lack of leadership as why I left the active component. I was not the only one to feel the same way about how the Army was ran but we believed this was the norm. He was not a father figure that I was used to as a 1SG but a bully who was wanting to be heard when he wasn't even in the Hospital. No wonder it took him over 5 years and 6 1SG's before he was allowed to help "guide" the NCO's of C company LRMC. I have no fear in the repercussions by posting this small rant. I still have counselings from Stoney Crump charging me with hideous crimes, which did not happen. He forced me to sign the counselings because he said who is going to believe you??? Well now PVT Crump, you have created your fate and I will visit you at Ft. Leavenworth as DS White. Sad day for his family, they were nice people and I know he was a good father to them so I do feel bad for them.

"… and most CSMs aren’t that stupid." Wanna bet?

"Well now PVT Crump, you have created your fate and I will visit you at Ft. Leavenworth." More than likley he will get a slap on the risk and retire.

If he is smart he will opt for a courts martial and be tried by a "jury of his peers". If so, I think the results will be similiar to the recent CM of a CMS in Germany for sexual assualt etc. of a Jr Enlisted – not guilty of all charges.

OJ would be proud of the military CM system.

It's amazing that this idiot thought that he could get away with this. If they allow this POS to retire there are going to be a lot of soldiers who will be PO'd.

I served under CSM Crump at Heidelberg, and pretty much every NCO had mixed feelings about him. Sometimes he has a motivational voice and force, but then he would switch on a dime and smash you in place. Especially to Senior NCO's. He would lock them in front of everyone which as a young NCO didn't look professional to me or the jr enlisted. I am really interested to find how the awards and decorations accumulated. Especially with so many being awarded for prior service in the Marine Corps. As small as the Army is someone would have recognized him from his early career and been "like when did you get that tap?" This read this article on him is definitely surprising because he was such an advocate for do the right thing even when no one is looking. I did not always agree w/ his leadership but I thought he was a good one.

This situation was reviewed by the Marine Corps and Joes, let me tell you – with all respect cause we cannot do it without each other – this guy somehow fell off the "esteem" boulder or never had it. We never ran his ass out — but he lied and that is probably the worst kind. He claimed to be have been in our ForceRecon and deployed to Beirut at the Barracks bombing and later to Grenada. To make it worse, he put it in writing at the SGM Academy that you guys hold dear! HOld his ass to the fire and never giver up. HOOAH!

We love our Army brothers and so sorry this happened. Semper Fi Joes.
