Korean-American Eco-Loon Behind Discovery Channel Attack

» by in: Environment

Why can’t these loons just off themselves quietly in their own homes instead of creating mass panic and trying to kill others?

A man who railed against the Discovery Channel’s environmental programming for years burst into the company’s headquarters with at least one explosive device strapped to his body Wednesday and took three people hostage at gunpoint before police shot him to death, officials said.

The hostages — two Discovery Communications employees and a security guard — were unhurt after the four-hour standoff. Montgomery County Police Chief Thomas Manger said tactical officers moved in after officers monitoring the gunman on building security cameras saw him pull out a handgun and point it at a hostage.

An explosive device on the gunman’s body detonated when police shot him, Manger said. Police were trying to determine whether two boxes and two backpacks the gunman had also contained explosives.  [Associated Press]

So why was this guy so pissed off at the Discovery Channel, well they didn’t do enough to promote global warming alarmism:

“The Discovery Channel produces many so-called ‘Environmental Programs’ supposedly there to save the planet,” Lee said in an ad he took out in a Washington newspaper to promote the protest. “But the truth is things are getting WORSE! Their programs are causing more harm than good.”

In court and online, Lee faulted the Discovery Channel for shows as varied as “Future Weapons,” “It Takes a Thief” and “Planet Green.”

A lengthy posting that could be seen Wednesday on a website registered to Lee said Discovery and its affiliates should stop “encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants,” a possible reference to shows like “Kate Plus 8″ and “19 Kids and Counting.” Instead, he said, the network should air “programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility.”

This guy and Paul Watson could hang out and discuss how they would sterilize people.

Oh and if you are wondering where he gets the time to conduct such protests, well he is unemployed and probably cashing government unemployment checks to fund his nonsense:

At Lee’s trial, he said he began working to save the planet after being laid off from his job in San Diego.

Also is anyone surprised one of his heroes is Al Gore?:

He said he was inspired by “Ishmael,” a novel by environmentalist Daniel Quinn, and by former Vice President Al Gore’s documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.”

He is also reportedly a Korean-American though that doesn’t really have anything to do with this guy being a global warming nut.  The bottom line here is that you have some loser inspired by mis-truths in Al Gore’s movie, which led to a fanatic devotion to the green faith, which in turn led to violence. Now I see the use of Sea Shepherd, if this guy would have just joined Sea Shepherd all of this could have been avoided and his fanaticism could have been directed at Japanese whalers instead. Fortunately no one, but this nut was killed in this incident.

Finally could you just imagine what the headlines would be if a global warming skeptic did this?

Then why proclaim it in the subject?

"Then why proclaim it in the subject?"

…to lay the groundwork for the inevitable time in the future when some overblown accusations get thrown at the crazy, violent, round-eyed devils.

Each event such as this serves as a buffer or shield against unreasonable generalizations.

"Finally could you just imagine what the headlines would be if a global warming skeptic did this"

The global warming skeptics are few and far between and few of them are skeptical enough to stand up to anyone.

No doubt this guy suffered from some mental illness and as with any animal suffering, he needed to be put-down. And there a lot of people suffering. I would say 2/3 of people are suffering.

Fanatic devotion to any faith can lead to violence. Logic, reason and even a bit of common sense are usually the best course.

I read his manifesto rant. His gripse seem to have been more about global over population than global warming. We are making too damn many "filthy" babies.

At least he led by example and had himself removed from the roster.

If he had thought about it more, he would recognize they are self-solving problems. When we make the earth less inhabitable, it results in reduced human population. If we let it go so far as to extinct ourselves, the earth will be able to restore itself to a pristine state in a couple thousand years. Problems solved.

Yup, he went crazy. Why target the DSC when a person can do more good distributing condoms in places that needed them? That would reduce overpopulation a lot more than failing to blow up DSC headquarters.

Though, if you wanna play body-count games, ROKDROP, your boys Bill O' and Glenn Beck are leading Al Gore in the body count game. Maybe Homeland Security should have a word with them, like they're trying with the rogue Iman in Yemen.

I can't believe he was hatin' on Future Weapons! I love that show!

Some people like me are curious to know which descent he is. I even made a bet.

    Refer to this, http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_discovery_channel_g…
Ah, he's a both Korean and Japanese descent. ㅋㅋ

He was born in Hawaii to a Korean descended father and a Japanese descended mother. He doesn't sound "Korean" to me. Looks like any other mixed ethnic you find in America – purely American, and a byproduct of American gun crazy society. Don't try to blame his actions on Korea.

Korean, Japanese, American? Whatever. He was a guy who should have been put on medications, or have been monitored in order to assure that he was taking his prescribed meds. He was obviously delusional. Being delusional is one thing, but it can be lethal when it's coupled with a person who can formulate a plan and carry it out.

Eco-loon? Not really. He was just plain disturbed. As a matter of fact, he was supposed to spend time in a psychiatric hospital in 2008 after having gotten in trouble with the law back then, but was instead thrown back onto the streets.

  • ChickenHead

    Tom,

Hawaii is the LEAST gun-crazy state.

    Teadrinker,

yapping about the environment = eco

    crazy = loon

…but, your point is well taken. Some crazy people gravitate toward religion. Some crazy people gravitate toward saving whales. Some crazy people gravitate toward teaching English in Korea.

I knew a loser guy like this once… he was an angry, frustrated and unstable guy. I introduced him to firearms and the joys of collecting, modifying and designing.

As one observer pointed out, "You took a wacko and made him into a dangerous wacko."

    True, that.

But it was channeled correctly… by me and others.

Now he is a rich guy… and his passion pacified him.

He is less wacko… and not angry at all… and, despite being surrounded by the tools of death and destruction, he is so caught up in his own productive little world that he is a danger to nobody…

…or, indirectly, a danger to everybody.

This eco-loon was a bundle of energy and productivity… but society never channeled him in the right direction.

A guy like this would clean up an oil spill with a toothbrush if he thought he was making a difference.

There is a lesson here… if we all care to learn it.

…or maybe he was just a freak that needed offing and the world is better off without him.

While he was unemployed, there is no indication he was collecting or cashing government unemployment checks. He had money to throw away, which he literally did, to gather a crowd, at a protest in 2008.

His guns were starter pistols. One of the bombs he had strapped to himself exploded, but apparently caused harm to none of his hostages.

He might have just been sane enough to plan to have himself martyred to get publicity to his "causes."

  • Leon LaPorte
    2:20 am on September 3rd, 2010 16

Tommy boy, I have not seen anyone blame his actions on his "blood". But now that I think about it, being Japanese and Korean must have caused him to go insane.

Yep, many loons gravitate to religion. Eco-looneryism is a religion and AlGore is the prophet (profit).

Well at least they won't have to waste taxpayer money on a trial for this piece of sierra. I wonder if Al Gore will fly to a news conference in his private jet to decry the violence but to raise our awareness of 'global warming'. Thank God that no innocent people were hurt. As ugly as this loser is I don't think he would ever have to worry about having kids & 'polluting the world.'

So let me get this straight, people are: 1)so stupid they can't think for themselves 2)Believe someone without question 3)act on their beliefs?

So what is the difference between someone who claims global warming and someone who is skeptical?

Am I suppose to believe one side or the other?

    #19,

"So what is the difference between someone who claims global warming and someone who is skeptical?"

Well…Whether it is presently a global phenomenon or not, there is ample evidence that the Arctic is warming up, which is cause for concern.

    #27,

He was a figurehead, just like Reagan. But, unlike Reagan, who took to the role like only a professional actor could, Bush continuously failed at it. He obviously didn't do much prep work and in the last bit it's obvious he was having a hard time hearing the line he was being fed in his earpiece. A more professional and experienced actor would have not choked so bad.

Yes, he's clearly a filthy mud blood. Born outside of the penninsula and corrupted by Japanese blood? Certainly doesn't "sound" like a Korean to me.

More importantly, a pure Korean blood would have prevented the individual from embracing fantaticism. Koreans are notorious moderates.

Surabol #29 I think all those NK soldiers marching around on KIS or KJI birthday and screaming, and the NK commandos who have committed suicide rather than being captured, I just don't think that they are very moderate. I remember hearing a number of years ago about an anti-Japanese demonstration in SK where the demonstrators cut their own thumbs off, again I don't think that moderation is the operative word here. I'm sure there are both moderate & extreme elements in all societies. This nutcase, James Lee is just a wacko and the fact that he is part Korean has absolutely nothing to do with the crime that he committed as GI Korea stated in his post. Also to say that because he is mixed that that caused his mental problems is also wrong because as I recall the nutcase who killed people as Virginia Tech was a full blooded Korean. Racial crap is just that-crap.
