Floating Casinos Planned as Part of Korea’s Four Rivers Project

The Four Rivers Project has been an issue of much contention in South Korea and the fact that floating casinos are now planned for each river will probably raise a few eyebrows:

“The Four Major Rivers Restoration Project is being financed entirely by national debt, and its economic effectiveness is very much in doubt,” said Lee during an interview with PBS. “Instead, the resources being used could go to education or technological development to boost future GNP significantly, and this could in turn aid Korea’s financial health.”

This is at odds with the direction set by the GNP leadership, which said it could not concede on the Four Major Rivers Restoration Project.

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that the Lee administration is considering floating casinos on the four major rivers to activate the tourism industry.

In a press release Thursday, Democratic Party Lawmaker Suh Gab-won said he had obtained a final goods and services report regarding the adoption of floating casinos on the four major rivers received by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST). He said it was revealed that the Lee administration was considering the adoption of floating casinos as part of a “river cruise” project with cruise boats to link the Four Rivers tourism resources.  [Hankyoreh]

This is why I am skeptical of the current administration's idea of progress which focuses upon dubious gimmicks rather than solutions. Considering the connections between gambling and organized crime, is this really a good idea, is this the best the government could do!?

Consider the links between organized crime and interstate commerce, construction, banking, insurance, entertainment, sanitation… Phew! Wwe should all hide in our hobbit holes.

Besides, Korean society would collapse without corruption.

The difference between American corrupted leaders vs Korean corrupted leaders.

Korean corrupted leaders maybe corrupt but at least they work to raise the standard of living for the country, and the country develops for the better.

American corrupted leaders on the other hand, they'll pocket the loot for themselves to the tune of billions and even trillions of dollars, hell with the others – what's more important are the all the established cronies that they are part of. Because of this, the country's broke with tent cities popping up everywhere and homeless people going hungry. The US has the dubious honor of being the richest country in the history of the world, turning into a third world basket case. Only your status as a reserve currency is propping up your country.

Tom, there are not tent cities springing up in America. Tom, the U.S. Dollar is remaining strong while the Euro falls. Tom, the only way the United States will become a third World country is after the rest of the Globe has fallen due to some major catasrophe. Tom you are delusional and sometimes an entertaining troll, sometimes.

Tom, you really believe in casino gambling as the best way to raise public revenues? You think organized crime is happy to be taxed on 100% of their profits?

The last time I was in Korea (2006), I saw a crazy proliferation of of Adult Internet Cafes (성인 PC 방s) that seemed to have sprouted up in every neighborhood of Seoul in a year. I'm guessing these are still around?

But, this entire project seems to be one that's just a special-interest, vote getting project. I'm not entirely convinced this project will ever become a reality and to me seems much more like a way of getting votes much the way of the other major "project." Meanwhile, there's Korea's real projects coming up, such as, the G-20 summit and Korea's economy seems to be plugging away…
