Picture of the Day: Rice Aid to North Korea

Sept. 17, PAJU, South Korea -- Trucks carrying 203 tons of rice in aid to flood victims in North Korea pass the inter-Korean immigration office in South Korea's western border town of Paju on Sept. 17. The aid donated by civic organizations came a day after a shipment of 530 tons of flour. (Yonhap) (END)

I always thought one of the major contradictions of the Sunshine Policy was basically its self-serving objective — a philosophy to keep the peninsula divided for perpetuity. For example, I always wondered where they get the rice. I mean South Korea's rice market is extremely (and to a large degree I believe still protected for the foreseeable future), so it seems that previous left of center administrations donation of rice was just as much about raising the domestic price of rice in Korea and subsidizing Korea's farmers as much as it was about feeding poor, hungry North Koreans.

It does seem to be pretty smart though, paying lip service to the eventual unification of Korea and keeping farmers happy with a small bribe while not offending any party.

Joe, it does cost the consumers who must pay higher prices for rice. But, in South Korea, no one speaks for the Korean consumers.

The North Korean elites and soldiers will eat well tonight. As for the rest of the people, Kim Jong-Il doesn't care if they live or die.
