Here is an update on the crackdown on prostitution in South Korea, it is going about as well as most readers here expected:
In July a series of three suicides occurred in Pohang, a port city about 370 kilometers southeast of Seoul.
The three women, who were employed at bars, were involved in a joint surety for the “slave contract” with their pimps. After one woman killed herself, the others followed suit, feeling pressure to bear the debts she left behind.
Aimed at rooting out the rampant sex trade here, the government implemented the Special Law on Sex Trade in 2004. Brothels in red-light districts were shut down and millions of pimps and prostitutes were forced to quit working.
However, the nation’s sex trade shows no sign of a recession with new, clever types of prostitution, such as barbershops and massage parlors employing prostitutes, taking advantage of legal loopholes. [Korea Herald]
These loophole are not something that most of didn’t already know was going on and were probably arguably allowed in the prostitution crackdown law in order to keep the prostitution industry going while giving the appearance of doing something. If you are wondering the sex trade remains quite profitable:
Kwak Chang-yong, chief of the female crimes division at the National Police Agency, also admitted that the sex trade remains profitable because the people involved earn more money than the potential fines imposed.
According to him, a client pays 160,000 to 200,000 won for prostitution at a massage parlor. If the shop hires three women and they service three clients a day, its profits could reach 40 to 50 million won per month.
But the fines that they face don’t exceed 5 million won in most cases, he said. No administrative measures such as suspension of business are imposed.
Their promotional skills are getting cleverer. Some brothels operate popular online websites where clients post their comments after using their prostitution services. Others scatter thousands of name card-sized flyers using a vehicle with a hole at the bottom.
Really when you look at it from the Korean government perspective the prostitution crackdown has worked out very well. It stopped criticism of South Korea by the US State Department while at the same time maintaining the prostitution industry, and bringing in increased revenue to the government with the fines. You can read more on this at the Korea Herald link.

It is so reassuring to see that the Korean National Police Academy's female crimes division was able to figure out that pimps will continue to operate as long as the profit far outweighs the fines.
Maybe the NPA's traffic division will someday figure out that unenforced traffic laws will be routinely broken by drivers.

Alright dammit. I believe we were discussing hookers?
11:32 pm on October 5th, 2010 23
Hooker Hill — Itaewon — before 1991. Good times Vince!
Groups of three to eight, standing around looking like office secretaries off from work. With their jackets and white shirts paired with the skirt.
Walk up the hill pass the first group and second. Three or four groups still to go.
Most spoke english. Some, not so much.
They would pull out this rubber tub and wash themselves, change the water and then wash you.
Korean Hookers back then would spoil you. Some would be young. I saw one after normal Hooker hours still out. Sitting on a brick and reading a book. Said she had a history test on Monday.
2002-3 you had to do a package check to make sure it wasn't a Korean guy. Some were obvious but others had started their operations.
12:06 am on October 6th, 2010 24
Retired GI, like your typical white male, will f*ck anything that moves and breathes, that includes paying transvestites. It's no wonder why you guys breed like crazy with so many kids, on the average having 3, 4, 5, and even 6 kids, because you guys cannot control your primitive instincts.
1:05 am on October 6th, 2010 25
Tom,
While "typical white males" might actually "f*ck anything that moves and breathes", the recent census data claims that Hispanics are the ones that can't control their "primitive instincts" and are having "so many kids".
Interestingly, Hispanics are followed by Asians… beating out the stereotypically irresponsible Blacks.
And, of course, Whites are at the bottom in family size… which can be observed in just about every public place except Salt Lake City.
"Minorities", at about 25% of the American population, are now accounting for 48% of the births.
Tom, with your knowledge, experience and insight into American thinking and culture, you should be able to identify flaws within every facet of the United States which could be pointed out and ridiculed… and which might even get some of the people here to look at things from a different point of view and modify their thinking.
Instead you say stupid stuff like white people are having lots of kids.
C'mon, Tom. Get real.
1:42 am on October 6th, 2010 26
Tom is a Chinese woman who's only funtion for the Communist is to post stupidity. Not long ago I thought he was a bitter KATUSA. But that is nolonger a posibility.
No Korean man could be that ignorant. Chinese maybe could be. Female could be.
Chinese female? Yea.
1:58 am on October 6th, 2010 27
Chickenhead, I don't consider such Asians like Filipinos, Indians, and even Chinese who are backwards, as North East Asians. Unlike Europe, Asia's economic differences are too huge to put them into one groups called "Asians". Koreans maybe included with the Filipinos in the Asia group, you know and I know, it's not really an accurate picture since Filipinos as Catholics do not practice birth control, thus pop out babies like bunny rabbits – skewing the numbers on paper for "Asians". Not to mention the East Indians who are famous for their growing of their population. But look at it closely, Koreans, on the average, have one kid, many even have none. This is true even in the West. North American whites on the other hand (not in Europe), have at least 2 kids, but many have as much as 3 or 4. All the white people I know that live in the suburbia have kids by the bucket loads. I don't know how they deal with all those crying kids running around barefooted breaking things and fighting. Being poor, white, and on social assistance, and unable to afford the kids doesn't seem to stop them. Instead they seem to pop out more babies! It's amazing to see it!
4:56 am on October 6th, 2010 28
Tom you're wrong again buddy and you're making it a habit.
What’s with all the orphanages in South Korea? Do Koreans just give their children up similar to soldiers at Hanam Village tossing out their trash?
I have never seen a "glass-house" in the US. I have seen many prostitutes sure, but I always think about the glass-houses a block away from Yongsan Station and the pretty young girls sitting on little stools or standing on shoes 10" tall to make their legs look longer. I'll also not forget the glass-houses next to Pyongtek Station and the young girls who worked there.
Maybe some of the girls are simply whores, but I can imagine others hate life.
5:18 am on October 6th, 2010 29
It's funny to see how one guy/gal/Chinese/Korean/or whatever (i.e. TOM) can end up hijacking a whole thread just by printing a typical Tom idioblatherism. Every one starts in on him and then the topic is Tom, not the original topic. I'm not complaining, it's actually quite funny. Maybe a poll should be conducted. How many people think he's male/female? What nationality? hetero/homo/bi/tran or trisexual? Is he a real person? Could he be one of the regular contributors here? Retired GI, Chickenhead, Lemmy, Leon, Teadrinker, or GI Korea???
6:00 am on October 6th, 2010 30
I'm not Retired GI, Chickenhead, Lemmy, Teadrinker, or GI Korea. Now who is left? Yah, I thought so.
And Lemmy, what's prostitution and orphans have to do with procreating indiscriminately all over the place like poop? Korea's birth rate is 1.2 children per family, versus 2 for Whites in America. I've never seen Korean families who have young kids, have more than one. On the other hand, white Americans routinely seem to have 2,3,and 4 at a time. And one family I knew had 5! My god, that is like Hill billy time. They were on social welfare!
7:02 am on October 6th, 2010 31
*Ahem*
I believe we were discussing….hookers?
7:05 am on October 6th, 2010 32
tom, again your stupidity humors me. And to think you are attending a university in America who seems happy to take your money.
You see your stupidity comes into play with the "Korea's birth rate is 1.2 children per family." I don't have to ask you what you mean, because you don't know and simply believe a lower figure is best. So if a population of 1,000,000 men marry 1,000,000 women that totals 2,000,000 people. Each married pair has 1.2 children That totals the population to 3,200,000. Assuming equal division among the children (excluding homosexuals and that 2% of women who can not bare children) into male and female and their parents die, there are 1,200,000. This generation totals 600,000 couples who have 1.2 children or 720,000 children. Those children form 360,000 couples who have 432,000 or 216,000 couples having 259,200 children or 129,600 breeding couples. And so on and so on and so on…..
Tom, you need to call the registrar's office and demand your tuition be refunded immediately.
You have no logic.
Again, the topic is prostitution in Korea, how the Korean whores rake in the money bribe the Korean government officials, and continue prostitution and human trafficking.
7:22 am on October 6th, 2010 33
The only way to shut him up is to put him on extinction. Just don't respond to anything he says. But, it's hard not to. He's like a little pest that you can only ignore for so long – then you have to slap him down.
7:27 am on October 6th, 2010 34
Korean prostitutes look far more attractive than the American prostitutes.
10:02 am on October 6th, 2010 35
I'll agree with that. Had my shair. Korean women have talent where it counts. Best $20 I ever spent.
10:37 am on October 6th, 2010 36
The jokes on you, because now they charge $200! Do you have that kind of money to blow every night, ex-GI?
On the other hand, the American hooker waiting on the streets is asking for $30 so that she can get another fix of crack. Sad but true, but it shows the different fortunes of the two nations right now. One is going up (Korea), while the other one is crashing and sinking (US).
12:05 pm on October 6th, 2010 37
No such thing after 20 years and retired as "ex-GI". They simply allow me to live as an Adult Now.
Haven't looked around but I'd bet you can find $200 American Hookers without going to far. But I'm sure you know this.
3:55 pm on October 6th, 2010 38
Tom,
Don't knock $30 blow jobs. It keeps the crack dealers employed.
I'm not clear at to what is actually being discussed here… but it seems simple to draw a quick conclusion and move on.
Things change.
When Korea was poor, girls were cheap. The more successful Korea gets, the more expensive the girls get. If Korea ever gets a drug problem, girls will be cheap again.
The Philippines is full of poor girls with meth addictions… so they are really cheap. Someday, they will get their act together and the action will move to Africa or, perhaps, even the Middle East.
In the end, if you are a single white guy under 30 on an extended stay anywhere in Asia or the third world, prostitution doesn't even need to be in your vocabulary.
6:02 pm on October 6th, 2010 39
Tom, again you make a fool of yourself. You have definded the differences in attitude for prostitution in Korea and the US and you didn't even know it. Your sterotyping an American prostitute with cheap, filthy, drug additciton filth is certainly correct. Ask the average American to describe a whore and thats the answer you're likely to get. (Take the expensive "call girl" out of the picture). Now, you assume the average Korean whore charges $200 for felatio. Simply put, I find this impossible to believe. After viewing the seedy glass-houses near Yongsan Station and Pyongtek and the whores working the streets and bars in Pusan on Texas street I hardly think they would ever charge $200 for felatio. Maybe you are a frequent customer of prostitutes in your po-dunk university in California and base your experience on that. In my experience, my ex-wife (whore) cost me a lot more that $200 per felatio encounter.
I imagine many of the loyal followers to this forum have heard a Korean, Phillipina, or Russian say "buy me drink".
7:20 pm on October 6th, 2010 40
USFK members, do Tom's comments on this influential blog undermine your morale?
7:50 pm on October 6th, 2010 41
#40 Quite the contrary. We can appreciate why Koreans need a big brother.
9:52 pm on October 6th, 2010 42
Thanks LaPorte.
#40, I'm here to inject a fresh different point of view. If that makes your moral go down, then that's not my fault.
And Lemmy, instead of glass houses which by the way are slowly disappearing, you can buy sex easily off of the internet in America. Enforcement on sex buying is also very lax in America. Don't tell me you guys are any more morally better than anybody, because if you were, you would not have so much problems with drugs and high crime rates. And no, I've never tried buying sex from Caucasion or Black women. I'm not sexually attracted to those women, because I find them simply ugly. Now if it was a nice 5'4 petite Korean woman, then sure no problem.
Certainly, my opinions may seem too upfront and that makes you offended. But having dealt with you guys in the past, you're not afraid to speak your minds among close circle of groups (like I am sharing with you guys), yet you guys try to project a political correctness in front of public, to try to hide your superiority complex. Be honest with yourselves, and don't be shy to express your true opinions.
10:53 pm on October 6th, 2010 43
Damn! Wasn't aware that I had been holding back.
Let me try this: America is the greatest. Russia, a close 2nd because of it's none PC thinking. PC is bring America down.
Asian countries are good for cheap labor and Hookers. Make sure you let them know the americans admire their work ethic and they will proudly put in those long days.
Better?

America is made up of individuals. I couldn't care any less about anyone's opinion of America or Americans, there is nothing I could do about it.
American police arrest prostitutes. The Youngsan Station, police station is at the end of the glass-house alley at Yongsan station. Every Korean girl I've asked identifies that glass-house district with prostitution, but can not explain why the police do nothing.
Maybe you can shed some light on that.
9:51 am on October 7th, 2010 51
Yea Beijing Betty. What about that?
10:17 am on October 7th, 2010 52
I can flip through magazines and the internet and even local newspapers. They advertise the same things in the US as they do in glass houses in Korea (which are dwindling). It seems nobody ever does anything. So the conclusion is? That Americans are so much more law abiding that they won't commit vice? But I can go next door and buy crack easily, yet where are the police?
11:41 am on October 7th, 2010 53
Beijing Betty, translated: Don't look at the lowlifes in Korea. She can't defend it.
So instead She said: But but, America! But but — AMERICA!!
After all, if not for America, Korea would be suburb of China.
You must live in a really piss poor area BB.
No crack for miles where I live. Only Deer, Beer and guns.
We did have some horses get loose last Christmas. Had to fire off a round to get them out of my yard.

I have a video of two Ajumas beating on each other. I guess all Koreans are like that.
Koreans do pride themselve on their fighting ability, so it follows that Koreans really like to FIGHT.
Then there is my first-hand experience of pulling one korean woman off while another GI pulled the other off this one bar girl.
Those Korean women were like little wolverines as they kicked the one korean girl in the face and gut. When she curled up those Korean Women were kicking her in the back and butt.
I MUST assume that ALL Korean People like to beat on other people.
But you don't care about Koreans do you Beijing Betty.

Tokyo Tom, the Korean living OFF OF America. If you can buy crack next door that is YOUR PROBLEM. If someone in my town sold crack or any other drug, the police would TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS, if we didn't think the police were doing their best, the crack dealer's home would burn its that simple.
There are poor, destitute, slum, scum communities in the US. You are apparently living in one of them and I am glad these slums are concentrated so as not to contaminate the America I know.
For the reader of my crap to have understood me to write Korea has more prostitution per square mile or per-capita demonstrates their prejudices.
Here is my point – the prostitutes (not call girls) in America work in an area of town conducive to whores, poor working class, street corners. The glass-houses are right in the middle of restaurant districts, business centers, Police stations, and "main stream" Korea.
The 'sex trade' in Korea seems more "accepted" by Korean society than the 'sex trade' in the US. Keep in mind, the powerful country of South Korea has the same land mass as the Southern half of the State of Florida.
DON'T INTERJECT YOUR OPINIONS OR PREJUDICE INTO MY MUSINGS.

Lemmy, first off, I don't live off of America. I'm not in America, nor wishes to be in America. Second, I pay local taxes just like any other, and I pay my expensive tuitions plus rent, food, books, transportation, entertainment and all the other living costs that are associated with studying in any university abroad. All the money that I pump into the local economy, comes straight from Korea. So in essence, I'm paying for what I'm getting, and what I'm getting, is what I paid for. I'm helping the local economy, I should be appreciated, and the university that woed me with their business marketing materials, should feel lucky that I'm attending their school, because in essence, I'm one of their high paying customers. That's the concept what you white folks fails to understand time in and time again. Anyone who looks the part of visible minority, it's immediately perceived as "they're here to immigrate and to take advantage of the system". It's quite annoying, if you know what I mean. Most Koreans that go to America are not immigrants. Over 90% of them are tourists, visitors, and students who will either mostly leave either in short term or long term.
Now going back to the crack issue. I don't live in a crack area, but I've visited the US enough to know how terrible some of your areas are. You can walk towards an area where crack addicts hang out, but then walk 5 more minutes and you have million dollar apartments. These crack houses are right in the middle of business districts amongst fancy restaurants on the other side of the block. The divide between rich and poor is fantastic, one of the worst I've ever seen in any country actually (save for some Third World countries). The drug trade is so widespread in the US, that's it's now acceptable to smoke marijuana and hashish. Just look at Whitney Huston, half your entertainment stars are either on drugs, drunk, mentally ill, and all have plastic surgeries (yet they still look bad). The US has superior social standards, like I've been constantly told? I highly don't think so.
2:28 am on October 8th, 2010 60
Beijing Betty forgot to mention the Korean females in show business there, that seem to enjoy killing themselves.
Or the perfectly healthy highschool grads that jump off buildings because of not getting the college of their desire.
Didn't koreans kill their un-wanted female babies not long ago? Yea, they did.
Lets not forget the racism showed toward mixed race children in Korea. It's still bad there. Only one doing anything about it is a mixed korean/african that wears number 86 for the Steelers. But if he had been raised in Korea, what would he be?
Beijing Betty talks so much about Crack that you would think She is a user herself.
America took what Korea would have thrown away, and look what he did with it.
Of course, we already know what Beijing Betty thinks of those other Asian countries. See #27
Talk about your arrogance and condemnation of those who are "different".
In that respect tom does sound like a Korean—which is no different than a Chinese in their racism, and female baby killing ways.

#59 you are sucking the life out of America and for cheap. But, you are not paying any more for your education than anyone else. You are paying "out of state" tuition which tells me you attend a public university. Now, since you pay, what you perceive as more than the "regular" student you are too stupid to understand how the educational system you are mooching off works. You pay no more than a student who pays out of state fees. If you resided in the state for “whatever the requirement is” you too could pay in-state-tutition, but since YOU HAVEN’T PAID STATE INCOME TAXES you don’t receive the entitlement. You admittedly pay LOCAL tax that pays for the luxury services you enjoy such as when a KOREAN STUDENT STARTS SHOOTING INNOCENT PEOPLE, THE POLICE COME AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND AMBULANCE COME. THE WATER ISN’T CONTAMINATED WITH HEAVY METALS. YOUR TRASH IS TAKEN AWAY. YOU HAVE A COURT TO SUE SOMEONE. THE LIST GOES ON AND ON AND ON. AND IF SOMETHING DOESN’T WORK YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO GET THE PROBLEM FIXED. THOSE SYSTEMS IN AMERICA WORK BETTER THAN ANY OTHER COUNTRY I’VE EVER BEEN. BY THE WAY, WALK INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET, GET HIT BY A CAR AND SEE HOW LONG IT TAKES TO GET AN AMBULANCE TO A HOSPITAL WITH COMPETENT DOCTORS, NOT A BUNCH OF CLOWNS SITTING IN THE ER WATCHING KOREAN DRAMAS, THEY DON’T RE-USE IV NEEDLES AND WHEN SOMETHING IS COVERED IN BLOOD, THAT TOO NOT USED AGAIN.
YOU ARE MOOCHING OFF THE SYSTEM. OBVIOUSLY YOU DON’T BELIEVE YOUR HOME COUNTRIES EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IS AS GOOD AS THAT IN AMERICA (DON’T TRY TO HIDE THAT-BASED ON YOUR TUITION COST COMMENT) OR WHERE EVER YOU ARE.
Also, take another course in reading because you don’t understand what people on this website write. I’m sure ESL is difficult, but when you think your abilities are greater than they actually are, you get yourself into trouble just like you’ve done here. I am not from California, nor have I ever lived there and I will never live there. You must have had dreams about California and wanted to live go. You must be infatuated with American entertainers also. I couldn’t care any less about Whitney Houston or any other entertainer, but again you must feel they are important or you wouldn’t have mentioned it.
I would also like to point out you had no argument with the glass-houses at Yongsan-station, Pyeong-tek, or Pusan. You didn’t make an argument about the Police stations that are adjacent and do nothing about the glass-houses. Why? You simply compared South Korea to the United States of America.
Tom, you are a pathetic little man. You cannot even admit you are taking advantage of the USA.
Lastly, I don’t believe you are anywhere other than the USA and are likely in California attending a part of the California University System, but it’s probably a tier 3 school such as Cal State at Long Beach.

Yes you are right Hill Billy. I am mooching off of America. I'm dirtying it up, and I'm using it and I'll wipe my feet on it when I'm done taking full advantage of all the system to my satisfaction – just like how the ESL teachers and USFK are doing in Korea.
It's a fair trade, no?

I wouldn't go so far to say that, Tom. A lot of us have been doing their work for them so they can focus their efforts on more profitable activities- at US expense.
We need to re-look the arrangement, but I still believe in a strong alliance with our ROK brothers.

#73,
I bet this ESL teacher has paid more taxes in this country than you ever will. I've owned a few businesses here, one of which employed about a dozen people. So, who's smooching whom?
