Kim Jong-nam Against Handing of North Korean Power to Younger Brother

» by in: North Korea

Kim Jong-il’s oldest son Kim Jong-nam must be really at odds with the rest his family to pipe up like this and give his opinion against the transfer of power to his younger brother:

The eldest son of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Il says he opposes a hereditary transfer of power to a third generation of his family.

Kim Jong Nam’s remarks come after North Korea unveiled his younger half brother, Kim Jong Un, as successor to their father in Pyongyang.

Japan’s TV Asahi showed Kim making the remarks in footage aired Tuesday from an interview in Beijing on Saturday.

Kim Jong Nam was once considered likely to succeed his father. He reportedly fell out of favor after being caught trying to enter Japan on a false passport in 2001.

He said that while he was against the succession, it should still be accepted if there are internal factors for carrying it out. [Associated Press]

The Japanese media continues to always get the best scoops it seems in regards to North Korea issues.

Was it bitterness or real concern? I read he had planned to open up the country, so maybe it's a bit of both.

I suspect that sometime before the transition, Jong Nam will defect to Japan. He seems to have an affinity for there and he may be about to wear out his welcome in North Korea.

I wouldn't be surprised in Kim Jong-un arranges a little accident for Kim Jong-nam. I read that he tried to have him bumped off before. He'll probably tell him that everything is ok and to come home. When he gets home… I don't think that the middle son has anything to worry about since Kim Jong-il thinks that he is effeminate & therefore is not a threat.

He must be in charge of the central warehouse where all the food aid was delivered. Doesn't look like any of the Kims have ever missed a meal or had to eat grass soup for lunch.

He's my brother and I love him. Still, he must die(t).
