Korean Human Rights Commission Rules On Gays In the Military

It looks like the US isn’t the only place having its own gays in the military debate:

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reached a decision that a military code provision allowing criminal punishment of homosexual people within the military is unconstitutional. This may rekindle the dispute of homosexuality in the military.
The decision comes after a group dedicated to supporting sexual minorities in the military requested that the commission review the constitutionality of Article 93 of the military code.  [KBS Global]

You can read more at the link, but it is interesting that this follows on the heels of a US judge ruling that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is unconstitutional.  So why now all the sudden is this unconstitutional?  No one has been able to explain that yet.  In the US it became unconstitutional simply because the Democratic politicians didn’t want to go on record before an election as voting to repeal DADT and instead had an activist judge do it for them.  In Korea it appears the NHRC is just trying to make a name for itself on the heels of the US court decision.

I don’t think this will really go anywhere any time soon considering that gays in Korea do not have the political connections, media backing, and the money of the gay groups in the US, but I guess we will see what happens.

    GI Korea,

I'm sure you know the situation for LGBT individuals in Korea is markedly different because of Korea's conscription policy. All male citizens of a certain age who do not suffer from physical disabilities are required to join the military, whether or not they are gay, yet the consequences are very dire if anybody is discovered to be a homosexual either on or off duty.

In the United States, people voluntarily choose to join the armed forces, and gay Americans have a choice not be to exposed simply by refusing to enlist. We are comparing apples and oranges here.

That must have been an incredible feat of manipulation and deception since the case where the judge declared DADT unconstitutional was brought to court by a group called the Log Cabin Republicans.

It's what Korean and Asian women like, and Korean men are just giving the women what they want in men – pretty, clean shaven, clear complexions, boyish faces, long hair, and impeccably clean and sleek looking with stylish tight fitting clothes. That's why you see gayish Korean looking guy end up with the best looking Korean and foreign girls, while the dumb GI's, tub of lard foreign teachers end up with desperate ugly Korean girls who are left overs that nobody wants. You can have them.

Joe it doesn't matter who brought up the lawsuit, the bottom line is that the Democrats are using an activist judge to repeal DADT instead of going on record and voting to repeal it themselves, which they had literally years to do.

#12, The fact that the current popular look for Korean males is considered to be on the fem/gay looking side in the most of the world is less significant because styles change and some are going to like it and some will not. Looking gay (based on current trends) is different than acting gay (based on Korean culture?), which is what a large percentage of Korean males do. I have to say that I don't really see the fem/gay styled guys with the "pretty girls" you speak of. They are usually hanging out with similarly styled males. I have NEVER seen an ultra fem male with a foreign female. You don't see too many asian men with non-asian ladies.

I accept your attempt to explain what you perceive as the reality for the Korean male style but you lack credibility when you go into your last sentence. Sure, there are a bit of all you listed in every culture but you express your anger toward foreigners in an unintelligent way.

Fact: I have seen many attractive Korean girls with caucasian males that I wouldn't touch with someone else's 20 foot pole. Just because a lady is good looking doesn't mean good looks are her number one prerequisite when dating. To each his own.

And frankly, I don't see what's so different with the way pop stars in Korea (or Japan) are with the metrosexual look (which was NOT invented in Asia) when the US just a couple decades earlier produced manly men in pink shirts and lipstick- and make-up-wearing rock bands.

Every Rose Has It's Thorn, Give Me Something To Believe In.

You raised an excellent point. S. Korea is 20 years behind the west in some aspects and 2000 in others. The hair band phenomena and those that followed was a very small subsect of the western world. The Korean "metrosexual" phenomena is much more mainstream and quite popular in actual numbers. The demusculinization of the human male is much more to blame for the "metrosexual" or "feminized" male look. Times are changing fast.

The Korean “metrosexual” phenomena is much more mainstream and quite popular in actual numbers.

Well, I think what's also at work is that there are far fewer people in South Korea who feel the need to get "buff," vis-à-vis American males Now whether that's an inadequacy of Korean males or an insecurity of American males is another matter.

With so many American males so quick to chime in with some variation of memes #74 and #75

#74. Successful male Korean music groups and solo artists are closeted homosexuals.

#75. Korean men in general are effeminate; their metrosexual tendencies mask their closeted homosexuality.

… my vote is there is a profound sexual insecurity among many American males.

And don't knock metrosexual tendencies. I got some good lovin' from the girlfriend later that evening every time she dragged me off for a pedicure. Plus, the squishy feeling between my toes felt very nice, and my feet did look good. :D

I wasn't knocking metrosexuals in the least. I have not gone as far as a pedicure, but municures are well within my range of acceptability. A male can be masculine and have exterior metrosexual tendencies. I believe what many westerners are refering to with respect to SOME Korean males (the "metrosexuals"), is their behavior along with the exterior female/metrosexual tendencies. Their actions and how they portray themselves (aura, nunchi etc.) can be perceived as extremely feminine.

Also, I see a clear distinction in the metrosexual/classic masculine tendencies with respect to age in S. Korea. Korean men over 40 do not fit the profile of the metrosexual. The younger men seem to be heading in the wrong direction.

Kushibo, you missed the #1 reason why many men workout, to get stronger and be physically fit.

  • kushibo
    7:11 pm on November 1st, 2010 34

Hamilton, I jog three miles a day. I also do thirty push-ups every morning. That is my main "workout," plus a lot of walking.

But let's not kid ourselves: It's the jogging that keeps me "physically fit." What little muscle tone I get from push-ups may help me move furniture and what-not when the time comes, but it is not about being "physically fit." I won't live longer from it, barring some accident where having that extra bit of strength saves my life.

So really that weight-training is about looking good, and since most women* don't like it beyond a certain point (major diminishing returns past that point), it's really about looking good for other men. Just like how women get dressed up for other women.

    * Back when I was a teenager in Seoul, I knew a guy from the States who had been a former Mr Olympia contestant, and he brought along some of his pics from his contests to show girls to impress them, thinking they'd be totally turned on by his physique. Knowing that this was a "hobby" that was important to them, they'd say polite things like, "Oh, that's nice," or, "Oh, how interesting." But one girl, as soon as he was out of earshot (though his Korean wasn't good anyway), exclaimed, "오, 징그러워!”

  • Hamilton
    8:08 pm on November 1st, 2010 35

    Kushibo,

I take it back then, but for me it is about physical fitness. I'm getting too old for enough gym time to maintain a six pack but moving heavy things, especially a case or two of beer on sale is something I want to maintain. My job also requires some physical fitness 1 or 2 times per week. I'm kind of sick about how much strength I've lost in the past 10 years.

I'm surprised the girl found it creepy your friend was a body builder. I would have expected her to say Isang-hayo. Something she wasn't used to.

#36, I'm not even close to Mr. anything. But I enjoy being physically strong. As an enlisted man, it was usually a plus. Maxing the pushup event in under 1 minute rather than struggling for 2 minutes was fun. Now that I'm older, it is nice to be stronger than some of the "young bucks" and break the "old man" stereotype. As for the sex appeal aspect: I've found that most American women don't care for a man that cares about his body "too much". It isn't the norm that they are used too. TOM may have a point there. It is something they find strange and perhaps see as a threat.

Although curious, not really interested. The lession is this, if your pushing iron to impress the ladies—STOP. Your paycheck is much more interesting to the ladies than your biceps or bench/deadlift/squat total.

A physically weak man with a good paycheck is what the ladies want. That and proper "life insurance" to cap off the perfect marriage. Then make sure you sit with her and listen to her talk about her feelings—make up some of your own is a plus. Have some pie. If she is really a wreck substitute whiskey for pie. She can babble on and on while you numb out.

But if you REALLY want to get on a woman's good side this is what you do. When she is tipping her glass and telling you about how messed up everything is, nod your head at the correct times and keep your mouth shut. Whatever you do, resist the urge to give advice to her about whatever problem she has. She doesn't want your help or input. She wants you to shut the hell up and LISTEN TO HER. She will then tell you that she loves you. Make sure you say you love her also. Even if you don't. NEVER, answer with the words, "I know"! She will morph into a demon before your eyes. Seen it. Terrible thing to see. Saw it on a korean woman. They are half demon already. (not racism — experience). I really felt sorry for her husband.

    That's an old wives tale.

How can you argue that strength training isn't any good for health? It's a well-known fact that increases bone density, among other things. That's exactly why retirement homes nowadays offer to their residents strength training exercise classes. It also helps people control their weight and boost their stamina. In addition, it helps protect the joints from injury and provides many psychological benefits.

Besides, any exercise is cardiovascular exercise as long as you keep your heart rate elevated for several minutes. Weight training accomplishes that when it's done correctly, such as by taking very short breaks (45 to 60 seconds) between sets.

Disagree! Males and females have two almost completely different mindsets. No major breakthrough in this statement. Women do dress in competition with other women via the elimination route to increase the chances of landing a potential suiter. "If I look better than the rest, the man will hit on me" mentality.

The male mind, more direct while cutting out the bullshit. I agree that too much muscle mass will be detrimental to the cause, but very few males have an abundance of muscle mass equal to that of a professional body builder. Unconsciously, women love a properly, well built, symmetrical male physique. Men do not work out to impress each other. They work out to look good and directly influence the opposite sex for exactly that – SEEEEEEEEEEXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX!

KUSHIBO – Two different mind sets. I know you're not oblivious to this reality.

The lord is like a man that walks up behind you; you cannot see him because he has purposefully made it so. Over your left shoulder, he holds a blank check and over your right, a knife that he promptly presses against your throat. All you have to do is reach out and take his free gift by submitting to him; by worshiping him; by obeying him. And if you declined, he will not hesitate to sever your throat like a squealing pig in a slaughterhouse; leaving you to fall on your back and drown in your own blood.

He loves you more than you are capable of knowing, and he will let you scream and suffer and cry for eternity if you fail to reciprocate his love.

Take the preaching elsewhere- it isn't germane to the discussion.

Teadrinker gets it- resistance training builds muscle and bone mass and helps maintain muscle strength and health. You can do a weight circuit and get some cardio benefit out of it. I can tell you- and so can smart people like physiologists- that body weight exercises are good to go and they don't require any special equipment.
