Shots Fired On the DMZ, Are They Significant?

» by in: DMZ

The North Koreans are increasing the pressure on the South Koreans to pay them off especially with the G-20 summit coming up:

The North Korean military fired two shots at a South Korean military guard post near the border in Hwacheon, Gangwon, at 5:26 p.m. yesterday, 118 kilometers (73 miles) northeast of Seoul, an official of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Friday.

According to the official, the South Korean military responded with three shots from a K-6 machine gun. There were no casualties on the South Korean side.

“It hasn’t been confirmed whether the shooting was accidental,” the official said. “The spot that was shot seemed to be the bottom of the guard post.”  [Joong Ang Ilbo]

Well it will be interesting to see if the South decides to pay these thugs off not to cause trouble before the G-20.

Normal everyday stuff. It's not like they sunk a ship or anything. Jeesh!

No, it's only significant to people who have blog sites.

The shots have been fired and all the GI's are hiding and shivering from fear.

Nothing new. You guys should have seen it when South Vietnam fell. The KPA lit up the DMZ with flares and tracers in celebration.

Then was the ambush of the convoy at the JSA back in the late 60's or early 70's, killing around 4 people. Or the attack on the JSA Advance Camp (now Camp Bonifas). Or the "Axe Murder Incident".

And these don't even begin to cover all of the other times shots ahve been fired or people killed in the DMZ.

It's merely North Korea being North Korea, a spoiled, petulant child seeking attention.

Comments #1,2,4 —Two thumbs up. A non-event. Not like a mini-sub grounded itself and was found with a dead crew.

Shivering in fear, Tom? Hell- none of us HEARD about it. I had people from the US emailing me worried about it all. I had no idea what the hell they were referring to.

    Until now.

For retired GI. Just a minor point of clarification. It was the Sango sub that grounded itself but the nK crew and the nK SOF personnel were not found dead. 12 or so were the victims of execution by one of their own, others were killed and the thought is two made it back across to the north. It was the Yugo sub that got caught in the nets of a ROK fishing boat and when it was finally towed back to port by the ROK Navy the nK SOF operators had killed the sub crew of about 5 and the 4 SOF operators committed suicide.

For Dave. I never said anything about the DPRK SOF. The "crew" of the sub were found killed "dead".

I heard that one DPRK SOF was captured. Don't know. I might have to look into it some more now. Curious.

In the Yugo sub the nK SOF beat the Navy crewmen to death with steel rods for screwing up and getting caught in the fishing nets and then SOF guys killed themselves. I still have a photo of the remains of one who had put a hand grenade on his knee and put his face on top of it and pulled the pin. The Yugo sub like the Sango is a SOF infiltration and exfiltration platform which is why it had SOF members in it. And yes, I do believe that one of the Sango sub personnel was captured. I also remember that they holed up for awhile at the Youngpyong Ski resort as it was September 2006 when it happened. I know they stayed at least a day there and broke open the candy machines. Great field craft but as I said it looks like a couple of them did make it back across the DMZ.

"Well it will be interesting to see if the South decides to pay these thugs off not to cause trouble before the G-20."

I'm sure they already did because the family reunions were held on the next day.

Shots are always going to be exchanged. It's sad. But what is more sadder is the south did nothing when the north blew up its ship. Koreans are long on rhetoric and short on specifics.

If it was a UK ship, Aussie ship, German ship, Russian ship, etc., or even an American ship that was blown up….these countries would have "gone to war." But no, not SK! They are scared.

I was friends with a SK Army Infantry Captain a few years ago. They used to set up ambushes in the DMZ and wait for the NKs to come. He said it really sucked, cold, wet, frozen, and don't you dare move for hours.

Both sides shoot each other, or try to, daily. It only makes the news 1% of the time. Ho hum.
