Preview of Jeffrey Miller’s Novel, “War Remains”

» by in: Books

Here is a press release I received from ROK Drop reader Jeffrey Miller on a new novel he has written that is set during the Korean War:

On February 12, 1951, Sgt. Robert “Bobby” Washkowiak a soldier in the Thirty-eighth Infantry Regiment is reported missing in action north of Hoengsong. Although his body is never recovered, the US Army lists him as killed in action at the end of 1953. Married a year before the war broke out, Bobby and his wife Mary have a son, Ronnie. He only got to see his son one time, just a few weeks before the Second Infantry Division shipped out to Korea.

At first, Bobby’s wife Mary back LaSalle, Illinois—a small town 90 miles southwest of Chicago—does not give up hope that her husband might have been a prisoner of war; however, when she is informed that her husband is listed as killed in action, body not recovered, she puts all his letters and photos of her late husband in a footlocker and puts it in the attic. A few years after the war, she remarries and forgets all about the footlocker.

Fifty years later, the footlocker is “discovered” in the attic after Mary, following the death of her second husband, moves into a smaller apartment. When Bobby’s grandson Michael learns about the footlocker and its contents, he is curious about his grandfather and the Korean War. Although he knew very little about his “biological” grandfather, he begins to read the letters as well as read up on the war to learn more about his grandfather. In the process, he not only learns much about his grandfather, but he also discovers a “forgotten war.”

For those interested, the book can be purchased at this link.
