What People Leave In the Seoul Subway

» by in: Seoul

Fortunately for me I have never left anything on the subway before, but quite a few other people have according to this article:

ewelry, dentures – and a pet snake.

These are among the sundry items that subway passengers have left behind and end up in the lost and found at Seoul Metro, the public corporation that runs subway lines 1 through 4.

As for that snake, workers found a black shopping bag left behind in a subway car last October and brought it to the lost and found office. They were shocked when they opened the bag and found a thick, white snake, about 60 centimeters (2 feet) long, species unknown.

“A lost dog or a cat gets in from time to time but I’ve never experienced a lost snake,” Lee Jo-won, a sales management team leader, said on Friday.  [Joong Ang Ilbo]

So has anyone else left something of interest on the subway?

A couple of weeks ago I left my bag with laptop inside on the train. At the station office they were really helpful in tracking down the train and contacting someone to find the bag and drop it off at the lost and found down the line. Of course, this meant an hour and a half round trip to retrieve my computer. Not exactly how I envisioned my Friday night, but was grateful to get it back. Don't feel I would have had the same luck, say, in New York or London.

I left my brand new iPhone on the train one morning, in a nearly empty car that was due to stop three staions up the tracks. I realized about 30 seconds after I got off and the doors closed before I could get back on. I had a travel companion with me and we started calling it until an older Korean Gentleman answered it. He told me to meet him at his place of work to retreive it and I bought him coffee for the effort. This was one of the best and worst experiences I have had in my years in Korea.

It's not just because of the CCTV, but also in part because South Korea does not have a serious drug problem (I won't bother to bring up the other sociological factors).

I never left anything on the subway before, but it is good to see that people were able to get most of their stuff back. I did once had $20 fall out of my pocket at the Uijongbu train station.

While sitting on the train an older ajushi came up to me and gave me the $20. I was a little confused because I didn't realize the $20 fell out of my pocket and was wondering why this guy just walked up to me and gave me $20 and walked off. A little while later I realized I had dropped the $20 and this guy picked it up and gave it back to me on the train.
