Chinese Piano Player Punks the Whitehouse

» by in: China

This is being played up as being a bigger deal than what it really is, but still you would think the Whitehouse staff would vet these people more closely:

Chinese-born pianist Lang Lang gave a musical shout out to America-hating patriots in his homeland when he played at the White House state dinner last week.

During his performance, Lang tinkled the ivories with the famous anti-American propaganda tune “My Motherland” — the theme song from the Chinese-made Korean War movie “Battle on Shangangling Mountain.”

Chinese President Hu Jintao, the guest of honor at the dinner, surely recognized the melody. The song has been a favorite anti-American propaganda tool for decades.

Lang apparently knew exactly what he was playing.  [NY Post]

You can more at the link, but the guy was quite proud to play the anti-US song:

Lang said in a TV interview that he played the song to reflect Chinese pride.

“I think playing the tune at the White House banquet can help us, as Chinese people, feel extremely proud of ourselves and express our feelings through the song,” he told the Chinese network Phoenix TV.

“I think it’s especially good. Also, I like the tune in and of itself. Every time I hear it, I feel extremely moved.”

    TD beat me too it.

If an American in China had played an anti-Chinese song – or stood up and shouted "Free Tibet" – he'd be lucky to have left the country alive. The authorities would have had to take him into custody to prevent mobs from ripping him to pieces, and there would have been (state-affiliated) riots in large cities all over China. I say "state-affiliated" because they would have been honest, spontaneous expressions of mass outrage by the Chinese, but the Chinese government would have jumped on the bandwagon with them only stepping in if they got too out of control.

Also, the American would have been criticized outside of China too. Even with a "Free Tibet" shout-out.

Bah, you're seeing to much into this. Besides, Communism is on it's way down in China. How do I know? I bought a couple of t-shirts with the picture of Mao for 5$ by the Great Wall. Yes, the Communist icon has become a means to sell t-shirts. I find great irony in that.

    Tbone…

That was my first thought as well… but the First Amendment rightfully protects such douchebaggery.

This unnecessary act of disrespect toward the country where he prefers to live and take advantage of the higher income, greater freedom, and better standard of living, needs to be punished socially.

Patriotic Americans, from fans to critics, should show their displeasure by effectively ending his career.

Overthinking and knee jerking – read the lyrics on Wikipedia, it is a blatant rip off of "America The Beautiful" and has about the same meaning in China. The Chinese do not see it as Anti-anything, they see it as pride in home.

  • usinkorea
    8:36 pm on January 25th, 2011 12

I'll have to leave #10 in the question box.

The lyrics of the song don't overtly, in Western eyes, sound anti-anything. But, I'm not so sure how it plays in Chinese society with their literary style.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Motherland#cite_n…

If the friends come, there is fine wine

    But if the wolves come

Those who greet him have hunting guns.

East Asian poetry is very strong in imagery and metaphors. Far more so than Western poetry. Literati in Korea could start revolts based on use of words like "wolves" or "bending tree" under "heavy snow".

The song was made for an ultra-patriotic movie about the Korean War. It is obvious the wolves would be the Americans.

Depending on the severity of the movie and how much it and the song have stuck in the Chinese collective conscious, it might or might not be a big, clear slap in the face when played at the White House for a China state visit…

    18 & 19, I agree. Surprise!

But when you play the VP on the right with the Presidential Candidate on the left, you lose.

It demonstrates that you understand Obama was/is a weak candidate. You can't compare him to the Vet, so you compare Obama to the VP, who is more "equal" to Obama.

Lets face it. She is just as stupid as Obama is. That is why she always comes into the conversation. Obama can not be compared to the vet. The choice is obvious.

As for being a "maverick", I don't see it. A "maverick" would not want to be President.

As for myself, I don't vote for VPs. But if I did, she is still better than brain dead Joe. Talk about your token white boy. Joe is it. Obama picked the most useless individual he could find. For the most useless position in government. Pretty much just as McCain did.

Sorry. But I'm not going to defend on a pointless VP argument. They both suck.

53% of the voting American public are just Stupid. But it is a great deal of fun to know I'm head and shoulders above that 53% in my ability to reason and understand. But then again, that's like comparing myself to the bottom 53% so it really isn't that great a statement.

Bottom line is that Obama's race helped him and McCain attempted to nullify that with a female VP. Didn't work. I knew it wouldn't. McCain opening with "my friends" every time he spoke didn't help either. You MUST buy me a drink, before you can be MY friend.

In any case, it is much more fun for me this way. The MAN is black—sorta, kinda.

Yes, Obama should stop acting like he wants to be friends with everyone (wouldn't be a problem with McCain who's becoming a bitter old man) and tell the Democrats to grow a pair, but to say he's no different than Palin? Nobody is as dumb as the hockey mom. Need I remind you that Obama was a law professor. Palin barely made it through journalism school (how many universities did she attend before finding one that would pass her?), and never did anything more impressive with that than covering local sports.

So, the movie is fiction. There were so many Chinese killed during the Korean War, the number is so high it's too dangerous for the Chinese government to tally up their losses in an honest manner, nor are they all that interested in finding the remains of their soldiers. 150 000 dead? Think ten to twenty times that many. Mass graves of Chinese casualties are still found nowadays.

Also back to the point, if this had happened in China, the Chinese street would have erupted in days of violence and mayhem. And the Chinese government would have milked it as long as it didn't get too out of control.

Now, off topic for the post, but comparing Bush and Obama — if Bush's administration had given Hillary Clinton's speech, and violence erupted across North Africa and threatened to spread into the always-troubled Middle East, what would the world and American press have been screaming? What are they saying about it now?

For the record, I am happy to see the Obama administration talking about the spread of democracy and liberty and in those regions…

….But if Bush had said it and unrest had risen, we would have been blasted with rhetoric about "regime change" and neo-imperialism from the very same press that got Obama his job.

All in the military have seen individuals get pushed up thru the ranks to jobs with greater titles and less involvement. Sometimes this is because of their sex and sometimes it is their race. Sometimes it is because they are a D/A and it is the easy way to be rid of them.

I knew a guy once that had done every job in the platoon. He thought he had vast experience in leadership. The truth was that we were still trying to find something that he could do. He was sent off to a "school" to be an instructor and later was promoted again.

In regards to President Obama being a professor or not, I heard an interview with a full professor on the news who knew the President at the University of Chicago and he provided context on what he did there. He explained that President Obama was a guest lecturer for the various courses at the University and that he usually taught twice a week. The University considered all guest lecturers as part of the faculty and thus professors. I don't know if this is a normal for a major university to consider guest lecturers professors or not. Anyone know? The bottom line is that the UofC did consider him a professor.

Anyway he went on to say that within the faculty it was well known that President Obama had many political friends and that the position at the University was a way for him to build his resume, get a paycheck, and still have time to work on his political career. He also said that President Obama did a good job at the university with the classes he taught but personally found Obama unengaging because he had his circle of likeminded friends at the university that he rarely strayed from.

The inside politics said that McCain really wanted to go with Democrat defector Joe Lieberman. That might have put McCain on top in the general election. But his pollsters told him the party's hardcore base wouldn't stand for it, so they came up with Palin.

Any serious observer of politics over the past 10 years knew that the John McCain of 2008 was not the McCain of 2004 and was very far removed from the McCain of 2002. He only carried the moniker of "maverick" in 2008 but was like a prop compared to the man who earned respect across party lines during his career. He was never liked by the Limbaugh crowd until he fell in line.

The fact for any Republican contender vying for the White Horse these days, unless things change seriously in the next year and a half, is that the primaries will winnow out only the candidates trying to appease an uncompromising base. Whereas the Democrat base over this term will have learned to accept compromise and settle for less than all they want. The primaries may leave the Republicans with a candidate forced to take positions that would be much less unappealing than the Democrat candidate in the general election voters. An increasingly large part of the electorate claim to be independent and they will be looking for someone to work the middle.

This next year and half should be very interesting. Congressmen will have to defend draconian spending cuts which won't make many electorate happy. When the campaigning starts, will candidates be able to get away with non-comments cuts they support? Will they make economically insignificant suggestions about "cutting waste" or be willing to admit to the largest part of their bases that things dear to them like Medicare, Defense and possibly Social Security are the real elephants in the room?

I have been gone from the US for many years, but not long ago I returned. What I saw was sad. So many people embrace their victimhood, have their hand out expecting some entity to give them a handout of "their fair share" while the republic crumbles.

Point of interest. The word "uncompromising". Liberals use it in the sence of being a weakness.

    I like the word "uncompromising".

I like people that DO NOT COMPROMISE.

I like people that know what they stand for and refuse to compromise.

To compromise is to be weak. To compromise is to fail.

The liberal dems only talk of uncompromising after they lost the House. Nancy was/is uncompromising. Likely the only thing I liked about her. One of the things I hated about McCain was his seeming desire to compromise.

Bottom Line: Uncompromising is a good thing.

I personally didn't understand McCain's choice of her. She just doesn't have it to be a POTUS or a VPOTUS. She fills a niche in todays politics, fires up her base and pisses off the opposition. She is now like the rabid commentators on radio and TV. Will never be elected, but keeps things stirred up. But, I like her TV show. And she'd probably be a great neighbor. I can just imagine her in a halter top and shorts hanging laundry on a clothesline on a breezy, sunny day, or peering into her mailbox to see if her copy of Guns and Ammo arrived… ;-)

Maybe that's the heart of a question that needs to be answered in the coming years: Can a democracy work without compromise?

Compromise seems to be necessary for all modern social groups. Compared to other societies we consider to be primitive, our modern marriages require compromise. Just being a member of a modern family requires compromise. I have to compromise every day to coexist with some people.

Yes, but the left wants us to compromise some of our basic rights to get along with them. I suggest that they leave us alone and we'll get along just fine.

58 Leaders have no business thinking of compromise when it means going against what they believe/know is right. Compromise leads to failure in matters of pointing the country in a direction or course of action.

But with the WIFE—well that is another matter.

Also any social group that you wish to be accepted in.

But in matters of government, compromise is Suicidal. Or it should be.

I don't want my leaders to compromise with those opposed to what I believe needs to be done. I want them to be stubborn and pigheaded and a pain in the assses of the opposition. I don't want them to shake hands on a compromise. I want them pissed off and cursing.

I thought that was my fantasy. Now I see I have to share it! ;-)

I always had this thing for short shorts, tub tops, glasses and pig-tails. Almost as bad as plaid skirts and pig-tails.

    #51,

Bingo. Had he done that, he would have most probably won…But, he was still too much of a centrist, maybe even in individualist. So, they effed him over. They made more money that way.

    #54,

Sure, and the reason Fox News likes her is? It all comes down to money, you're right about that. At least she isn't selling overpriced collectible gold coins to little old ladies, right?

PS. I have no illusions about the fact that politicians are just for show and do very little, if any, real work. The point was made very clear to me by a very close relative of mine who was very high up in politics, very high up.

Then you have gridlock, which sustains a status quo. If that status quo already has the country on a path to disaster, principles and pride won't mean much.

Leftists think ware stupid. That's why they keep offering the same Soviet-style promises year after year.

And there are enough greedy fools to keep them in office. But mostly in districts composed of people who live off the government's teat.

JoeC and the TeaDrinker are both contemptible; but I believe they are sincerely so. They are really just cartoonish figures out of Orwell's Animal Farm…

There will be a government that controls everything; but when it arrives, our resident trolls will be among the first the new government sends to the gulags… Just look at how the locals were were treated by Mugabe, Pol Pot, Che, and others…

63 Pride has NOTHING to do with it. Principle however IS the point.

Rather gridlock, than compromise the mission.

Rather gridlock, than progress in the wrong direction.

Gridlock is not necessarily a bad thing or something to be avoided.

Gridlock is what you get when you don't lose and the other side doesn't win.

    (think Korea, 1950s)

Progress in the wrong direction ====== BAD. Gridlock ===== GOOD. Progress in the correct direction ===== BETTER.

Nonsense. VP Biden is a democrat; by virtue of this he has superior political acumen, and exhibits statesman-like qualities.

He is brilliant, witty, wise. A superior leader. We are so lucky to have him. In the traditions of Andrew Young and Jimmy Carter.

    #65,

Since you brought up the Soviets and stupidity…

"When [The President] so often repeated the Sputnik Moment that he would aspire Americans to celebrate. He needs to remember that what happened back then with the former communist USSR and their victory in that race to space, yeah, they won, but they also incurred so much debt at the time that it led to the inevitable collapse of the Soviet Union."

Sarah Palin on Fox News this week.

Yup, dumb as a box of rocks.

Wow. A slick SPEECH. That really MEANS something….

  • vince
    8:42 am on January 29th, 2011 73

The Soviet Union may have collapsed, but to the Communists, it was a casualty of a bigger campaign. That one nation (albeit a really BIG one) collapsed is almost inconsequential, in that the Communist idea of pushing their agenda to the globe was and is quite successful.

Their ideology spread like a cancer and now has infiltrated the institutions of the West.

    They won.

Oh, Vince. Americans have been calling Canadians communists for years, and some of here still do despite the fact we have a conservative government.

Oh, and Tracy Morgan seems to have figured out why McCain picked Palin:

“Let me tell you something about Sarah Palin, man, she’s good masturbation material. Glasses and all that. Great masturbation material.”

I don't know why I am even dignifying such filth with a response, other than to say that my Canadian relatives have seen the decline of Canada into a politically correct nation, protected by the USA. Afraid we won't be able to do that much longer, because our own leftists have pretty much broke the bank. Things will even out, though, as we become the North American Union and we all see our standard of living level out to pretty much what the UK has, and we're all government dependents.

If that is what you want, it's on hot rails to get here, and has already arrived in a lot of ways.

#79 Most of my black comrades in Service either had white wives or were chasing white tail, sometimes Asian tail.

As for successful black men KNOWN to all, look no further than Tiger Woods. That fool couldn't get enough white tail. Need another? OJ.

Bottom line is that most successful black men want a blond blue eyed beauty. Goes with their "image" of success.

I don't understand the reasoning myself, but it is true in Black American Culture.

So until you provide a survey that proves me wrong, it is you who is wrong.

Seen it far too much to have been mistaken "Listener".

Pick a statement and tell me which is correct.

White women never learn? Or Black men never learn? Which is more accurate?

And don't get pissed at me and start name calling. I see what I see.

Plus, my fetish is Asian. So I don't care who is doing who, in the black/white world. None of my business.

In about 200 years, racial differences won't matter much. Most people will be some combination of white, black, brown and Asian. Except for some scary looking, semi-inbred, holdouts who meet in the woods every so often to rail about preservation of their race.

Most of the people I know ARE combinations of white, black, brown and asian. Ever been on an Army base?

In #81 you really do sound like a race-baiting Liberal. Good job!

Black and asian makes for a nice mix by the way. Black and Irish—not so much.

My hispanic army buddy and his black wife resulted in a beautiful little girl.

While my white army buddy and his korean wife had two kids the boy did fine. The girl is cute, but not bright. Her black boyfriend had to beat her twice before she left him. He sure had her trained well—untill the beating started that is.

As for your prediction, it will take longer than you think for Africa to be creamed down and mixed out. Those are the "scary looking, semi-inbred, holdouts who meet in the woods" that you spoke of, right?

Ah, that was fun JoeC. ;-) Try again whenever you feel like it.
