Libyans Gone Wild On Korean Construction Sites

This has to be one of the oddest challenges that these construction companies have had to deal with at an overseas building project:

In Libya, no one’s words carry as much weight as that of its leader, Muammar el-Qaddafi.

But even Qaddafi has to take words back some time ? and pay for the damage they cause.

According to an official from the International Contractors Association of Korea, on Sunday, the Libyan leader said in a speech at a meeting of the General People’s Congress, which was reported in the media, that houses and apartments being built by foreign construction companies belong to the Libyan people, who have the right to live in them.

Lots of Libyans took his words at face value and raided apartment construction sites run by Korean and other foreign companies. Some tried to occupy the unfinished apartments, bringing in blankets and carpets.

Hundreds of Libyans descended on four Korean-run construction sites in the capital of Tripoli on Jan. 14 and 15, destroying heavy equipment, looting money and other valuables, and setting vehicles and other facilities on fire, according to company officials. One Korean construction worker was injured after being slugged in the face, according to media reports.

About 100 Libyans are still occupying one site and local police are trying to persuade them to leave. Construction activity has halted on some sites, but foreign ministry officials said the disorder will not spread further.  [Joong Ang Ilbo]

The Muslim book states that Muslims get points toward heaven by lying and cheating non-believers. It's called "al taqiyyah." Many Muslims deny this. However, they also deny "jihad" means killing non-believers. So therefore some people believe the Muslims are willing to go against their book and deny themselves points toward heaven.

    Riiiiiiiiiight…

If you sign a contract with anyone from a culture different than your own, expect "little things like this" to come up…

It amazes me although it shouldn't that companies in order to make a few bucks will do business with regimes like Saddam Hussein's Iraq, Iran, communist North Korea, and Libya. Hopefully (I know it will never happen) at least some of these companies will wise up and pull out of these places. I wonder what the Libyan authorities will tell the thieves who followed Daffy's words, "Hey we're sorry, we really didn't mean it."

Tom Langley, you're right. Lenin stated that the last capitalist would be hanged with a rope he sold his executioner.

BTW, why are we funding the World Bank and allowing China to borrow money to loan us? Why did Obama bail out GM so they could build facories in China to hire Chinese worker to build cars to sell to the Chinese? And why are we still paying them $65 Million every year in "Foreign Aid"?

No point in all these questions. I, for one, welcome our new Chinese masters. As long as they bring egg rolls…

    That's why I don't trust Americans. ;-)

setnaffa 4, I'm looking for evidence that Lenin actually said it. Can you help me?

Glans, you can find evidence he did not? Reread Animal Farm. Read about Stalin. One simply needs to see the Wikipedia page was updated on 20 December 2010 to remind oneself of the rules painted on the barn wall in Orwell's story. Changing versions of History are part of their meme…

Do you really believe Conservatives make up these things? Are we smart enough? http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=1…

The "official record" is somewhat hazier since Mr. Stalin and succeeding Secretaries have altered the words to fit the needs of the Revolution… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Secretary_of…

Reading more about Lenin and his "theology" leads inexorably toward the conclusion that he most certainly believed it. And every Soviet leader echoed the same sentiment.

setnaffa 7, the statement just seems counterproductive. Even if he thought the last capitalist would be hanged with a rope he sold his executioner, why would Lenin state that?

Try an experiment: go to a gun a shop; ask for the proprietor. Say to him, "You capitalist, sell me the weapon with which I shall liquidate you!"

    Glans,

    Try this experiment.

Go to a liberal and say, "The country is running out of money, the economy will crash, the tax base will dry up, and the government will no longer afford to be able to support non-productive citizens who refuse to develop skills or abilities. They will starve in the streets."

"Uh… whatever. Just don't cut my entitlement."

None-the-less, the gunshop owner WILL sell you a gun that you can then use against him. I don't think Lenin planned to TELL the last capitalist exactly what he had in mind with that rope.

On the other hand, you can't hang the last communist because, despite fantastic production numbers and the consistent meeting of quotas, there would be a chronic shortage of rope… only available after a long wait in line… and of such low quality that it couldn't support any weight… an the rope ration wouldn't permit enough rope to make an actual noose.

Glans #6, If you google "lenin quotes the last capitalist will sell the rope" the I think it was the 5th option to come up was titled "Vladimir Lenin Quotes-ruler sayings" from quotespapa.com. They have 185 quotes from Lenin including (it's quite a way down the list) "The Capitalist will sell us the rope with which we will hang them." I first heard this quote when I was a young man & I never heard anyone dispute its authenticity. Some have attributed the quote to Stalin, & I suppose he probably said it as well, Lenin was the person who originally said it. Some of the other quotes on the list I know to be accurate. If any pro-gun rights people are reading my post please go to that list. There are some quotes there that you need to read.

    Glans…

I don't know if he said it or not.

It certainly is fitting… but one thing I have learned in the Internet Age is that many of the quotes commonly thought to have been made by certain people turn out to be untrue when actually researched.

I'm starting to suspect that much of pop history is mostly bullcorn.

Sadly, voters and politicians make many decisions based on pop history rather than reality.
