Robert Gates Hopes Effort To Convince Him To Run For President Fails

» by in: Politics-US

I am kind of surprised anyone is even thinking that Defense Secretary Robert Gates would want to be President?:

If you needed any additional proof that many presidential draft efforts are simply bunk, consider Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ comments about his very own draft campaign:”He told us that he hoped we failed miserably,” Charles Glover, co-founder of www.draftgates2012.com told The Caucus.  [Associated Press]

Secretary Gates first of all I don’t think could ever win an election for President because he is not someone who likes to be out everywhere campaigning. He is a very smart and organized guy that is good and running organizations, but campaigning for an election I just don’t see happening. Secondly Gates has said in many interviews that he is done with DC and plans to retire with his wife in Washington State.

Anyway Gates as President would be the worst nightmare for the defense companies that make big money selling the Pentagon things they don’t need because of members of Congress backing it.

He is an improvement over his predecessor who is finally coming out with his blame-the-other-guys book.

Since when has a DOD chief ever been "Presidential"?

We're not some banana republic (yet)…

There have been a few. Former SECDEF's/SECWAR's who became president: James Monroe, Jefferson Davis (CSA), William Howard Taft… I shouldn't even need to go into former top level generals who became president. I'm not sure why this would make us a banana republic although Winston Churchill, who was Secretary of State for War before he was PM, might jokingly encourage you.
