Korea has a number of good museums but I think the finest is the Korean War Memorial in Yongsan. This is something every visitor to Korea should set aside at least one day to see. It is absolutely huge, but enlightening museum that focuses mostly on the military history of Korea with most of it dedicated to the Korean War. The museum is free to those with a military ID and right outside of Yongsan Garrison; so there really isn’t a good reason why a servicemember shouldn’t at least visit this museum once during a tour to Korea. The new National Museum also located in the Seoul neighborhood of Yongsan is also great place to visit to learn more about the history and culture of Korea. That place is so huge you will need two days to go through it all. There are plenty of other great museums spread out all over the country that are well worth checking out. Does anyone have a favorite museum they would like to recommend?

The National Museum of Korea and the Seoul History Museum both have improved lately with better leadership. They bring in new exhibits every few months and keep things interesting.

I agree with you. The Military Museum is one of the best museums I have been in anywhere. I went 6 or 7 times while I was in Korea. The replica ghetto from the UN War upstairs was my favorite exhibit each time.

Off the top of my head,
1. Inside Korea Military Academy they have a neat museum dedicated to artifacts from past ancient wars in Korea to equipments used in modern era.
2.KOFIC Namyangju Studios is a good place to visit on the weekends. They have many movie sets(like Panmunjom set, used in the movie JSA,villages of Joseon era) and props displayed in a huge area.
3.National Museum of Contemporary Art in Kwacheon is a must see if you're an art fan.
I would avoid private museums or museums run by provinces unless someone has been there and strongly suggests that you visit it.

I really liked the Korean War Memorial in Yong San. I never could figure out the statue out front that depicts an American soldier hugging a child-I think. Anybody else have a different take on the statue or can explain what it really represents?
I really liked the F-86 jet that is on display.

5,
Doesn't the plaque say it represents two brothers on opposite sides of the conflict meeting on the battle field?

The Korean War Museum is excellent but the National Museum is not excellent… for anyone but a Korean because it does not support other languages to include English. For a country that is trying to promote tourism they do a poor job of advertising it seeing so many of the event websites are only in Korean. Two thumbs down.
