I think the gate is supposed to represent stylized versions of Seoul's initials: ㅅ and ㄷ for 서울 대학교. In fact, it looks like the entire 서 is there.

Kushibo – Go to Center for Korean Studies on the University of Hawaii at Manoa Campus and look at the table on the right side of the stairs. You can get some free books there as a consolation prize.
