Masters 1st round- K.J. Choi and Y.E. Yang tied for 3rd, 2 shots out of the lead

It’s way too early to speculate on the chances of these South Korean golfers. Former U.S. Open champion and CBS golf analyst Ken Venturi once said- ‘The Masters doesn’t begin till the 10th tee Sunday afternoon.

I can cite many instances of Masters history to back up that statement but I’ll just mention three.

1978- Gary Player was 5 shots back with 9 holes to go and he won.

1980- Seve Ballesteros with 10 holes to go, had a 10-shot lead. By the time he was down to 4 holes to go, his lead was just two. Ballesteros did win however.

1986- Jack Nicklaus was 4 down with 9 holes to go.

YE Yang, who outdueled Tiger Woods to win the 2009 PGA Championship, is playing in his 4th Masters. His best finish was a tie for 10th last year.

What Yang might be best known for at Augusta, is the tweet golf writer Dan Jenkins did about him at last year’s tournament. Jenkins, who is the dean of  golf writers got himself into hot water for saying ‘Y.E. Yang is only 3 shots out of the lead. I think we got takeout from him last night.’

Read my post from last year to know what I think of what Jenkins said.

KJ Choi has twice contended at The Masters. The first time was in 2004, he finished 3rd. Last year he finished tied for 4th.  In each instance, Choi got to a shot or two out of the lead on the back nine during Sunday’s final round, but couldn’t keep pace with Phil Mickelson who won in both 2004 and 2010.

We’ll see what happens this weekend.
