Picture of the Day: Korean Royal Texts Return from France

Workers at Incheon International Airport move special containers carrying the first shipment of 297 volumes of "Oegyujanggak" from an Asiana Airlines plane at Incheon International Airport on April 14. The Korean royal books dating back to the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) were looted by French troops in 1866 and had been kept at the French national library. The remaining three shipments will be delivered to South Korea by May 27. (Yonhap)

Oh, geez. Wait 'til they find out the French conquerors used the Chronicles as toilet paper on the voyage back to Calais.

But, that advertizement on the side of the container…That's in really poor taste.

Did the French care for the Korean texts well?

I guess I'm wondering if they stored them in moldy boxes in a warm, damp room or if they kept those babies in a freezer.

Teadrinker 2, what I can read on the container seems thorougly acceptable. So I guess there's something wrong with whatever is written there in Hangul. What does it say

    #4,

The fact a corporation is trying to use this as an opportunity to earn publicity for itself, with or without the consent of the Korean government, is what lacks a certain degree of good taste.

The National Museum has already announced they will be put on display starting in July. Get those bus reservations because every school kid in Korea is going on a field trip to see them starting in July. Just imagine the excitement!

I heard the French offered to surrender the texts but the Korean response was divided.

    #8,

You Americans with your French army jokes…A pathetic attempt at erasing the historical fact that if it wasn't for them you wouldn't have a country.

PS. And Brits are often portrayed in movies as being snobs…Really, Americans can be transparent sometimes.
