ROK Drop Open Thread, May 1, 2011

It is May Day and the first Open Thread of the month.  Share any links or stories you may have in the comments section.  To start things off what does everyone think of a supposed humanitarian mission turning into a mission to assassinate a political leader?

    About time…

Are not Obama and NATO doing exactly what they falsely accused Bush of doing in Iraq?

We’re interfering in a fight between a legitimate government, however cruel, and al Qaeda, on the side of the terrorists, who we are paying…

Setnaffa: Qadaffi is making the same argument, except with the “however” cruel part.

I personally have been evoking the spirit of ZOMBIE REAGAN to reign down justice upon Qadaffi.

Qadaffi is certainly getting what is coming to him one grandchild at a time… but, somehow, I don’t see the USA getting the last laugh on this.

I bet that goes to Islamic fundamentalist radicals of one flavor or another.

So when does the Obama Doctrine of humanitarian intervention get applied to Syria… and, then, the real prize of Iran?

A world war like this is a good thing.

The fight will (mostly) stay over there and they aren’t nearly as scary as the Chinese or reemerging Russians.

And it will keep good order and discipline in the States… especially if there is a big (but not too big) terrorist event every now and then to keep the population supporting new laws.

We have always been at war with Eastasia.

The airstrikes targeting Qadaffi has now got NATO on the defensive:

After two airstrikes in a week on targets close to Moammar Gadhafi, NATO was on the defensive Sunday over accusations that it was overstepping its mandate by trying to kill the Libyan leader.

Russia said Sunday that the bombing of the home of Gadhafi’s youngest son raised “serious doubts” about NATO’s assertions that it is not targeting the Libyan strongman or his relatives.

“Disproportionate use of force … is leading to detrimental consequences and the death of innocent civilians,” the Russian Foreign Ministry warned.

International law does not explicitly forbid attacks on military commanders during wartime, but the U.N. Security Council mandate authorizing NATO action charged alliance forces with establishing a no-fly zone and protecting civilians from attack.

Security council members Russia, China and Brazil have warned that attempts to change the regime or eliminate its members would be a violation of the mandate. [Associated Press]

If this was an attempt to take out Gadhafi than it appears that NATO is becoming inpatient with the stalemate.

GI Korea 5, it’s good to hear from our Russian friends about excessive force.

International law does not explicitly forbid attacks on military commanders during wartime … . Is that tragic or comic?

I’m guessing Bin Laden is dead. Look’s like the Prez is going to make an announcement.

Looks like the US has the body. I say stuff him and put him on display (inside a deli) in NYC.

Frankly, I hope he’s dead; but I also hope we can send all of his followers to Perdition with him…

The fight against multiple sclerosis goes on. WAMS (Women Against MS) and the MS Society of Canada will have a fund-raising luncheon at the Fairmont Royal York hotel on May 6. It’s the sixth year for the WAMS event, with this year’s luncheon on track to raise more than $250,000. The funds go toward a five-year Research and Training Network grant worth $500,000. healthzone.ca has the story.

    Glans,

Maybe they are just setting their sights too high.

Maybe they should concentrate on fighting one scleros at a time.

MOTHERS DAY is comin’ round the bend.

    Leon’s Mothers Day DMZ Creed

This is my mom. There are many like her, but this one is mine. My mom is my best friend. She is my life. I must master my mom as I must master my life. My mom, without me, is useless. Without my mom, I am useless. I must fire my mom true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will…

My mom and myself know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit…

My mom is human, even as I, because she is my life. Thus, I will learn of her as a brother. I will learn of her weaknesses, her strength, her parts, her accessories, her sights and her barrel. I will ever guard her against the ravages of weather and damage as I will ever guard my legs, my arms, my eyes and my heart against damage. I will keep my mom clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will…

Before God, I swear this creed. My mom and myself are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life. So be it, until victory is America’s and there is no enemy, but peace!

Yer mom sounds like a lot of fun.

I might ream her chamber and fit her for a larger caliber.

Do you like Chinese food? Do hate you government regulation?

‘It has been two years since China’s government, reeling from nationwide outrage over melamine-contaminated baby milk that sickened 300,000 infants and killed at least 6, declared food safety a national priority.

A stomach-turning string of food-safety scandals this spring, from recycled buns to contaminated pork, makes it clear that official efforts are falling short.

China’s iron political controls ensure that no powerful consumer lobby exists to agitate for reform, press lawsuits that punish wayward producers or lobby the government to pay as much attention to consumer safety as it does to controlling threats to its own power.’

Sharon LaFraniere of the New York Times has the scoop.
