Damn, lost track of time today; sleeping on the switch. Congratulations Kushibo.

I had to hold my iPhone out over a cliff’s edge from the summit of Mauna Loa, at just the right angle facing Hilo, to pick up a signal long enough to do this one.

Yes Kushibo got the correct answer. This picture was taken at Hwaamsa Temple outside of Sokcho in Gangwon-do. I am honored that Kushibo is willing to hang off the cliff of the world’s largest volcano in terms of volume just to answer a Korea Finder. ;-)

Note that the Korea Finders are posted every Thursday at 0300 PST.

    Why PST?

I may have been exaggerating just a bit for effect. But only just a bit.

But back in 2008, I actually did have to do almost exactly that at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon when my employer in Korea sent me something that had to be done immediately, and the only signal was from the South Rim. I was literally sticking my hand over the edge of the canyon at the Grand Canyon Lodge to maximize my signal so that I could continue a lengthy phone conversation and then send a large file.

    Why PST?

I suppose you’d rather have him do it every Thursday at 1900 KST?

By the way, isn’t it 0300 PDT, not PST? Will it always be 0300 whatever the time is in the Pacific Time Zone, PST or PDT?

hardyandtiny, the times for the Korea Finders has been something that has been ongoing discussion for many years and 0300PST seems to be a good time that works for everyone reading the site from North America and Korea.

    03:00 PST = 11:00 UTC

In addition to the PST I think you should add the KST.

Is the above picture taken at the temple or near the temple?

    1100 UTC is 2000 KST. I believe it’s 1000 UTC, right?

The thing is that GI Korea meant 0300 PDT, not PST. That would be 0200 PST, so we’re talking about 1900 KST.

Time zones and daylight time are confusing in a global blog. UTC today! UTC tomorrow! UTC forever!

The problem with UTC is that if it isn’t in your region, it becomes too abstract to really utilize easily. In the US and East Asia, we’re so far removed from Greenwich Mean Time that it feels irrelevant.

I think if GI Korea were to write the time in PDT/PST (depending on the time of year) and KST, then all would be well.

GMT should be the standard of all time on the internet. Nothing else makes sense. If it’s good enough for ships, weather services, the space station, communications facilities, military networks etc etc, well, it’s good enough for me. It’s the de facto excepted global standard and GI would do well to force us to use it so it becomes less abstract. It’s not like he’s changing the time constantly. It’s 1900 in Korea. Got it!

    Sign me GMT+9

    1000 GMT = 1900 KST

Okay, time to create an alert on the phone.

Gents I will make the correction on the time on the next Korea Finder. Also HardyandTiny it is still early enough in the Korea Finder competition to win this thing considering how no one has jumped to a big lead yet this year. Good luck!
