Seen here is a three-floor Geobukseon (Turtle Ship) that was recently restored using historical research at a shipyard in Seocheon, South Chungcheong Province. Commissioned on June 3, Geobukseon is a warship designed by legendary Korean naval chief Adm. Yi Sun-shin and was used to fight off invading Japanese forces in the early 15th century. The ship is 25.6 meters long, 8.67 meters wide and 6.06 meters high. (Yonhap)

“…Geobukseon is a warship designed by legendary Korean naval chief Adm. Yi Sun-shin…”
Actually, it’s a well documented fact that it was first designed 200 years earlier, in the 15th century. Yi even says so in his war diary.
But, also, if it was really built using historical research, then it would not have metal plating. There’s no mention of the ship being ironclad anywhere in Yi’s diary, nor any other account of the battles. Fact is, at the time the Japanese had few naval guns and so relied on boarding tactics to capture enemy ships. This is what made the turtle ship design such an effective one. They were covered in spikes to prevent boarding and were fitted with guns, which were used to destroy the Japanese ships. On top of that, the crew had muzzle-loaded firearms.
