Picture of the Day: 4th of July In Afghanistan

» by in: Afghanistan

As some of you know who were early followers of me on Facebook, I returned back to the US from deploying to Afghanistan this past spring.  Here is a picture of what 4th July was like last year in Afghanistan.  This picture is a parade a motorcycles put together on a US military base in southern Afghanistan.

You were in Afghanistan? For some reason, I had the impression you had a cushy job stateside.

One more reason my hat’s off to you, Sir.

Kushibo: Yep, unless they are part of a training unit most people are getting deployed through something called the ARFORGEN cycle, which in theory puts units through a regular rotation schedule. So, every unit, as long as the numbers qualify it to go, will go, or the members of the unit will be cross leveled (sent to) other units and will go when their year in the ARFORGEN cycle comes up.

I mean no disrespect, but driving around like that with your flag is kind of a white-trashy thing to do. ;-)

I mean no disrespect, but at least American white trash on parade day in a desolate war zone is mechanized.

    …and not nearly so ghay.

@7 – Then you may be surprised to know that the biggest flag waivers in Afghanistan are the Canadians. I once saw an NTV (non-tactical vehicle) with not one, but 4 Canadians flags on it.

Waving Canadian flag in a foreign country = American

9 Perhaps they thought they would be mistaken for the Red Crescent.

9, That’s not flag waving….it’s taking precautions. I wouldn’t want to be mistaken for an American over there too.

13 Canadian necks slice just as nicely as American necks… You’re either wit ‘em or agin ‘em.

Granted, perhaps they don’t want the Americans to blow them up. You might have something there…

“You got some strange Canadian fetish.”

No… I have a strange Calling Bullshyt fetish. I do it to everyone here when I disagree with their intentionally inflammatory statements… and, as of late, you have been making one-right-after-the-other.

You sound like Tom when you start making fun of the best Independence Day parade a group of guys can put together with very limited resources. In fact, it would be rather trashy NOT to display a flag on Independence Day.

Since every anti-American statement you have made recently can be humorously countered with a 15 second Google search showing the same or worse in Canada, it makes you an easy target… and probably plays well the the crowd of Americans here who all have some degree of patriotism and nationalism.

Don’t take it personally. Canada and Canadians are OK in my book… but, like gays and spaz kids, they are such easy targets of fun… especially when they are so easy to poke a response out of.

LLP already said it: In Afghanistan, it don’t make a lick of difference. The Taliban and Al Qaeda are pretty adept at figgering out who’s on the side of the ‘Mericans. In fact, they’ve been lobbing a few missiles at the South Korean contingent lately.

I hope they don’t blow up any of their shitters!

I thought the toilet enhancement project was in Iraq.

Serious question, what is the ROK presence doing in Afghanistan. Not just the military but the people (doctors? hospital construction crew?) they may be protecting.

When I look this up, I get conflicting information about what they’re doing in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It’s easier to see what the ROK Navy is doing with respect to anti-piracy efforts, but the Korean media is vague about the on-land overseas missions.

I was being fececious, of course. I think there are currently a grand total of 12 ROK military personnel in Asscrackistan. Probably some sort of UN thingy.

    #14,

“Granted, perhaps they don’t want the Americans to blow them up. You might have something there…”

Ah, ah, you’re such a joke. I’m sure you’re the centre of attention at wedding ceremonies, and that’s even before you get drunk and start a fight.

(The PPCLI are excellent soldiers. I’ve met some of them who have been to Afghanistan, as a matter of fact. A great group of soldiers.)

    #15,

Dude, you got a fetish about bullsh2t? You’re even stranger than I thought.

“You sound like Tom when you start making fun of the best Independence Day parade a group of guys can put together with very limited resources. In fact, it would be rather trashy NOT to display a flag on Independence Day.”

Didn’t notice the ;-) ? I was teasing. For a guy who likes to write limericks, your sense of humour sucks.

    #16,

I’m disappointed in you. You didn’t get that I was joking? I thought you had a better sense of humour than that.

Teadrinker (#20), I wasn’t taking that quite as seriously as you seem to think I was. I took yours as a somewhat tongue-in-cheek comment.
