By Via JoeC in the comments section comes this story of a shooting rampage that left 4 ROK Marines dead:
A Marine Corps corporal killed four soldiers and wounded another in a shooting spree Monday at his military unit based on Ganghwa Island near the maritime border with North Korea in the West Sea.
“The shooter, identified only as Kim, went on a shooting rampage inside his barracks at 11:50 a.m., killing four and wounding two, including himself,” Kim Tae-eun, a spokesman of the Marine Corps, said in a press conference televised nationwide.
He added that the death toll rose from three to four as an injured private lost his life after being taken to hospital.
A senior Marine Corps official also confirmed that Kim was arrested after attempting to commit suicide with a grenade.
“He tried to take his own life after firing at his fellow soldiers, who were taking a nap in their barracks at 11:50 a.m.,” he added. [Korea Times]
You can read more at the link, but this is the worst shooting rampage to hit the ROK military since 2005 when a ROK Army soldier stationed in Yeoncheon, which is just up the road from Camp Casey, killed 8 of his fellow soldiers. The killer claimed he went on the rampage because of bullying which the ROK Army for many years has been well known for. The perpetrator in this latest shooting is likewise blaming bullying and abuse for his actions.
Ganghwa-do is turning out to be a pretty dangerous place for ROK Marines for incidents that have nothing to do with North Korea.

Apparently keeping him away from loaded weapons wasn’t one of their safety measures. While it is certainly this individuals fault, leadership has a bit to answer for if they knew he wasn’t “right in the head.”

I was thinking after my first comment that I was a bit too glib on such a serious post. Four people died a horrible death while serving their country. They didn’t deserve that and perhaps we should accord them a little more respect.
