Maybe SBS should be spending less time reporting on GI’s in Itaewon and instead see what ROK Marines are up to in the villes they hang out in:
Some 1,335 soldiers in the Marine Corps, whose reputation has been tainted by a series of recent accidents and suicides, were punished for violence and abusive behavior in the last three years.
According to statistics submitted to lawmaker Seo Jong-pyo of the Democratic Party by the Defense Ministry on Wednesday, the number of those jailed for beatings or abusive behavior in the Marine Corps increased from 366 in 2008 to 505 in 2010.
Some 1,042 of the marines were jailed in military detention facilities for up to 15 days, the most severe punishment. From 2009 to the present, 761 were also given criminal penalties, 378 due to violence. [Chosun Ilbo]

How does the rate compare to that of the USFK? Higher, I would imagine…and “violent and abusive behavior” seems much more serious than parking tickets to me.

Heck, if you throw in the other crimes, the crime rate amongst ROK Marines must be astounding.

Does this mean ROKMC = The Dirty Dozen?

Who really wants the ROK Marines to be all sweetness and light?
Besides Kim Jong Il, I mean…

But… but… but… the Korean media only focuses on GI crimes… right?
How did this get in the paper?!

The ROKMC obviously needs more females and minorities in leadership positions.

Imagine what kind of angry reaction would be at rokdrop if it instead says crimes by US soldiers were forwarded to the Korean parliament for review…
Look at the source of the article, you dim wits. It’s a Korean paper reporting on the crimes by Korean soldiers. Unlike the Americanos who can’t take a criticism, you won’t see Korean military who are the targets of the criticism complain and whine.

Tom #8, You’re correct. You will not see it. Not Allowed!

Agree with you. We must understand that some people here have selective memory

#6,
You know what’s really funny? You can’t even spell “dimwit” correctly.

#6? Whoops. Typo. I meant #8… At least I know when I’ve made a mistake.

#12. I was so confused…

Did anybody here ever claim that the Korean press never runs negative stories about the Korean military?
Myopic vision…
Is there a widespread view within Korean society that Korean soldiers are more than likely thugs and criminals who run amok in Korean society and are never held accountable for their crimes? A view that is perpetuated, in part, through the media?
How many articles and TV news reports are going to be done about this Korean Marines issue?
How many significant violent crimes by individual Korean soldiers are covered extensively by the Korean press? How many by individual GIs over the past 30 years?
This is not rocket science.

And let’s see – in this thread, how many quick hitters have we had?
Short pot shots at this or that group utterly lacking in value in terms of a discussion?
There used to be a time where the forum was much more informative than trash talk…
