Lawmakers Want to Add Wall to Korean War Memorial

» by in: Korean War

I think the Korean War Memorial is one of the better memorials in Washington, DC,.  A wall with names on it like the Vietnam War Memorial I think will only make it better:

A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers is campaigning to build a Wall of Remembrance at the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.

Republican Ralph Hall of Texas and four other representatives sponsored a bill in the Committee on Natural Resources last week proposing to use private funds to build a glass wall listing some 33,000 of those who sacrificed their lives during the three-year war.

The wall would also include numbers for those missing in action, casualties and prisoners of war, and pay tribute to the 8,000 Koreans who fought alongside American troops as part of the Korean Augmentation to the U.S. Army between 1950 and 1953.   [Chosun Ilbo]

I definitely like the fact that KATUSA soldiers will be recognized in this proposal as well.

That would certainly take away a little of the “forgotten” part of the war…

    Ditto Setnaffa’s sentiments.

I agree adding the KATUSA’s is appropriate and educational as the average citizen doesn’t know what they are or the unique position and history the US has with out Korean allies.

I disagree with glass. It should be marble or granite. Something substantial with a sense of permanence…

    Transparent aluminum would rock though!

The Korean War Veteran’s Memorial already has a wall. It has etchings of soliers on it. Another wall would just close the memorial in, even if it was glass.

Put their Names on a wall? List the 8K still missing? I like it! Agree with Leon #4. (but I’ll take what I can get)

How can I (we) help this along?

I heard on the EBS radio station this morning that they didn’t find any buried barrels at Camp Carrol (sp?).

It is a known fact that POW’s were left behind after both the Korean war & the Vietnam war. Although it seems too late to require an accounting for an improvement in relations with Vietnam it is not too late to require an accounting of the left behind POW’s if there is ever an improvement in relations with North Korea. I agree with Leon LaPorte that the wall should be granite or marble.
