Q: What’s better than a sexy Asian fairy?

    A: A sexy Asian goblin…

    …gobblin’ yer meat, that is.

A period play contest? As in dressing up in knights and wizards? The Chosun Ilbo sure is trying real hard not to use the correct term, which is cosplay, a Japanese loan word to English.

COSPLAY itself is an English loan word to Japanese which means ‘COStume PLAY’.

“COSPLAY itself is an English loan word to Japanese which means ‘COStume PLAY’.”

Of course “costume” is a French loan word which means… well… costume…

…which is an Italian loan word… “costume”… meaning fashion or habit… which evolved from the Latin “consuetudinem”… meaning custom, habit, usage…

…making custom and costume the same words arriving by a different etymology.

More interstingly, “play” is a shortened loan word from Gullah… “m’fnknplaya”… which entered the English language at the peak of the Anglo-African slave trade.

In British English, it evolved to mean “activity engaged in for enjoyment and recreation” while its Eubonics definition followed more closely with its original meaning of “a bad-azz mofunker who be gittin’ all da fine biitches”.

Cosplay is frequently thought to be a portmanteau of “costume” and “play” but this is incorrect.

    In reality, “c.o.s.p.l.a.y.” is a acronym for…

Sheesh…I clicked “Submit”, changed page and then had to return because I had a sinking feeling that I had written doesn’t instead of isn’t…and I did.

As always, no thread is ever complete without Chickenhead’s contribution. I especially liked the expansion into Ebonics.

“Yes, I know. Funny how language works, doesn’t it?”

It is a mistake to call the act of dressing up in knights and wizards Creepy Oddballs Seeking Puussy Love Animated Youth. Therefore, period play may actually be a better term to use to describe this show. Does it not?
