For those that subscribe to Netflix there are a number of Korean movies that have been added to their streaming online movie database which has allowed me to watch a few Korean movies I have meaning to watch. The vampire movie “Thirst” was one of them:
g
The movie is directed by Park Chan-wook who has directed a number of other movies I have liked such as the “Vengeance Trilogy” and stars Song Kang-ho who is one of my favorite Korean actors. In addition it has the actress Kim Ok-bin getting naked so you would think this would be a good movie, however in my opinion it is horrible. So horrible in fact I couldn’t watch it to the end. From what I did watch I can tell you that Song Kang-ho plays a devout priest who willing allows himself to be used to test a vaccine against an ebola type of virus killing people in Africa. He is the first person to recover from the virus due to the vaccine. However, there is a side effect, he turns into a vampire. Not only does he turn into a vampire, but he is also a horny vampire thus the reason why he lusts after the wife of his best friend. Ultimately the priest ends up fooling around with his best friends wife who then convinces him to kill her husband who she claims abuses her even though he isn’t. The vampire kills his best friend but is haunted by visions of his best friend’s corpse and his wife eventually admits that she lied about the abuse. The vampire is upset about this and kills her and turns her into a vampire. She then goes around killing people and that is all I needed to see.
Maybe fans of vampire horror movies will like this flick but I just couldn’t get into it and just thought it was dumb. Did anyone else have the same thoughts when viewing this movie?

LOVED THIS MOVIE!!! I don’t even like vampire movies, but loved this one. It’s worth watching just for Kim Ok-Bin’s acting (and seeing her naked).
People that like A Movie Is Just A Movie or Old boy will also like this movie.

I saw this movie at the Honolulu Film festival and met Park Chanwook. I liked the fall from grace theme for the movie, but nitpicked on suspension of disbelief items – like how much blood can you really get from the same hospital patient before they run out of blood… ? The whole idea of the priest trying to keep his humanity and failing was good. I also liked the attempt to get a daylight like atmosphere through creating an all white apartment only for it to be stained with blood. It’s not something I’d watch with polite company though.

It’s a really good movie, what translation did you watch? The priest isn’t best friends with the annoying kid. They just knew each other when they were younger, actually when the husband was younger (their about 8~10 years age difference).
The movie was about the difference between doing what’s “right” and what you want to do. The conflict it creates and that sometimes people make the wrong choice for the right reasons.
