Picture of the Day: Bob Hope’s Korean War Jet

» by in: Korean War

Hope in Korea. Bob Hope was caught by the cameraman just as he was climbing out of the T-33 jet plane, which flew him from Taegu to Kimpo airfield in Korea, on his current entertainment tour. By the smile on the pilot's face, Hope has evidently made some witty remark about the ride.

We used to have great men like Steve Jobs, Johnny Cash, and Bob Hope.

    Now, we have Obama…

…and no Jobs, no Cash, and no Hope.

Don’t be too negative. We almost had a wonderful new bureaucracy to promote live “Christmas Trees”. I suspect the word “Chistmas” in it finally stopped Obama on that one.

Some of my favorite memories from my childhood are watching his USO shows with the family.

One of the best memories from the service was seeing Bob Hope, Brooke Shields, and Gloria Estefan come up to the DMZ in 1988. Bob and company were in Korea as part of the Olympic special that was being taped. Bob asked 8th Army if he could go see the troops up north. 2ID gladly accepted. Bob asked the other entertainers if any would like to go with him. Brooke, Gloria, and one of her guitar players did. Bob told his usual sappy jokes, the ones that are funny, but really not that funny. You should have seen the troopers of the 503rd that were on Z duty that day, many of them some really tough kids. All of them had faces lit up little kids, smiling wide, laughing hard and genuinely. At times, especially when Gloria did some of her songs, you could see men weeping and missing home. All really appreciated him coming up. I didnt know until I got home that Gloria’s dad was a retired infantry colonel, and had the CIB from Vietnam. In any event, it was a great day, and great of all of them to come north to see a bunch of homesick troops.
