Picture of the Day: Korean Parliament Ratifies KORUS FTA After Tear Gas Attack

Rep. Kim Seon-dong of South Korea's progressive minor opposition Democratic Labor Party explodes tear gas in front of the speaker's chair to block the National Assembly's Vice Speaker Chung Eui-hwa from pushing for the procedure to handle a pending bill on ratification of a Korea-U.S. free trade agreement on Nov. 22, 2011. Later in the day, the ruling Grand National Party alone forced the bill through a vote, with the speaker ordering security guards to prevent opposition lawmakers from physically blocking the voting procedure. Opposition parties, including the main opposition Democratic Party, have objected strongly to the ratification, insisting the agreement's investor-state dispute (ISD) settlement clause unfairly favors the United States. The U.S. Congress ratified the agreement early last month. This is a capture from video footage of Yonhap News Television. (Yonhap)

After looking over the FTA briefly, I think Big Pharmacy is going to make sure Koreans pay more for medicine than the reasonable price they pay now.

In other news, a trade law professor told my wife today that Korea would get taken advantage of by the FTA just as Korea has been taken advantage of by many other agreements with the United States. It was not necessarily bad, though, because Korea learns very well from its mistakes and is able to use the same tricks when it negotiates agreements with other countries… leading to a net gain for Korea.

I make no statement on the validity of this comment… but it was interesting enough to pass along and deeply consider.

If Korea thinks they are getting taken, why sign the deal ? That’s stupid !

I think FTA is really good for America but not really for South Korea. MB is strange guy…

California OJ pre-FTA: 50% customs duty.

California OJ post-FTA: 40% customs duty.

CH, that trade law professor has really read the FTA?

Most Americans think that the FTA’s will ship jobs overseas.

Tonight, I asked a student from a good university what he thought of the FTA.

You will never guess what he told me.

He told me almost word-for-word what my wife’s professor said in class yesterday.

His economics professor told his class the same thing.

I am starting to suspect there is an institutionalized campaign to spread this line of thinking.

It is now worth asking around about this.

Of course, the next question is… is this a valid line of reasoning or is this propaganda to calm angry students?

    #8,

You know all too well that the US government is not shy of playing dirty.

But, yes, I think it’s BS and I fully agree that when it comes to playing dirty tricks the South Korean government can hold its own. Remember how the WTO ruled that its 100% tariffs on alcohol was unjust, and so instead of lowering duty on whiskey, the South Korean government raised the taxes on soju to 100% too?

You gotta admit, that is awesome. Imagine if Joe Wilson or Ron Paul ran up to Harry Reid with a tear gas grenade.

I’m telling you, why don’t more of these guys carry baseball bats with them when they go in. Some guy runs up with a tear gas can, you smack the can then smack him upside the head. THEN proceed to the podium and ask if anyone else has a problem.
