Korean Government To Construct Larger Harbor On Dokdo

I understand why the Korean government is trying to increase tourism to Dokdo but really there isn’t a whole lot to see out there.  From my experience Dokdo was just a mildly interesting excursion during a great trip to Ulleungdo.  Ulleungdo is the real tourism gem that Korea should be promoting more then Dokdo:

South Korea’s easternmost islets of Dokdo in the East Sea consist of two main islets and 89 smaller rocks. The total surface area of the islets is 187,554 square meters. Dokdo is located 87.4 kilometers southeast of Ulleung Island and some 217 kilometers east of Jukbyeon in North Gyeongsang Province. The closest Japanese territory to Dokdo is the Oki Islands, which are located 157.5 kilometers from Dokdo.

Dokdo is considered to have unique, beautiful scenery as well as abundant water resources in nearby waters. The islets are also home to rare animals and plants.

The government is aiming to complete building a 210-meter breakwater in Dokdo by 2016. Currently, Dokdo has a harbor that is able to accommodate small vessels of around 300 tons. If appropriate nature conservation measures are put in place, Dokdo could turn out to be an attractive tourism spot.

However, some observers have expressed concern over whether the government will be able to complete the recent plan amid a territorial dispute with Japan over the islets.   [KBS Global]

The last sentence in this report is really dumb, what is Japan going to do to stop the Korean government from building the expanded harbor?  Send them a nasty letter?

Tokto is the “Four Corners” of Korea.

I don’t really support the whole Tokto tourism initiative, but I do think it’s to supplement trips to Ullǔngdo, not supplant them.

Its a political decision to counter japanese territorial ambition, so it doesn’t matter if Dokdo is ugly and nobody finds it interesting, they will build it because of the japanese.

Well, they are developing Ulleung-do, maybe even spoiling it, with plans for a large airport. This project is directly linked to the expected growth of tourism to Ulleung-do.

The “harbor” will probably be larger than the island itself.
