Does Race Matter In Korea When A Foreigner Needs Help?

I think this video is anecdotal and shouldn’t be used as evidence to make sweeping accusations of racism in Korea, but interesting none the less:

Via the Marmot’s Hole.

I think appearance has more to do with how you are treated by Koreans than race.  I think it would be interesting to see how a white guy dressed in baggy pants, earrings, and tattoos would have been treated by the people walking by?  I would suspect he would have gotten the same treatment the Southeast Asia guy got in the video.  I think it would also be interesting to see how the Southeast Asian guy would have been treated if he was dressed a bit nicer and spoke clearer English?

The SE asian guy came off a bit aggressive. Every beggar in NY always starts off with “can I ask you a question?”
I think if he just spit out COEX mall ( Koreans who dont know english will immediately hear COEX as a familiar term and put 2 and 2 together.

anyhow its not to say a darker person would be treated with utmost care.

Lol at those two chicks presumably arguing with each over who will talk to the Canadian guy first.

    ‘니가 말해줘바’
    ‘아냐 니가해~’

    lol

For all we know, the “Canadian” (he has a strange accent for a Canadian) was snubbed often as well.

Selective editing can push any message.

Well, korean society is racist toward black skinned people, and I know that because I was also discriminated in Korea because of my darker skin, afterall, how can someone living in Brazil keep a clear skin compared to someone living in Korea?

I think it’s accomplished with SKII whitener skin lotion, sold on local tv for those boys and girls who want to look whiter …

No way Simon, I have no problem with my dark arms, face and legs because I love outdoor sports(but the rest of my body is still white like snow) .
Honestly I dont care about this problem because I hardly go to Korea, and if someone discriminates me in Korea I simply dont care because I grew up facing the same problem here in Brazil.

    #4,

If that guy is Canadian, neither French nor English are his first language.

    #1,

Yes, the SE Asian guy approached them in the wrong manner (“Can I ask you a question?” is often followed by a pitch for a religious cult here too.) Besides, I’ve been here long enough to know that most pedestrians in Seoul can’t or don’t want to give directions. It’s got nothing to do with skin colour. Seoul is a big city, after all.

I also question the editing. I find it hard to believe that the European got a positive response every time and the SE Asian guy was always snubbed.

8: “Besides, I’ve been here long enough to know that most pedestrians in Seoul can’t or don’t want to give directions.”

There is something to that. The last time my Korean wife was in Seoul and asked passersby for directions in Korean, she had trouble too. Not normally outright refusal, but mostly abrupt half answers before scurrying away.

    There is discrimination everywhere
In the world. In Korea, it’s multi-dimensional (gender, education, income, type of car you drive, clothes, apartment size, how much plastic surgery you have,, etc) and one factor might offset others. However, type of car trumps all.

    《山海經》有記載,在神州和東海蓬萊之間有一座海底仙山,隋唐以來,日本、高麗循海路來中原進貢的使臣和留學生,以及唐、宋、明、清歷代東渡扶桑的中華人士都目睹過蘇岩,並留下文獻記載,歷史古籍更確認蘇岩礁屬於中國無誤。

    清末民初,中國的地質學、地理學進步後,專家更證實蘇岩礁位於東海大陸架上,是中國大陸海床的一部分。

    清末民初,中國的地質學、地理學進步後,專家更證實蘇岩位於東海大陸架上,是中國大陸海床的一部分。它位於中國領海和二百海里專屬經濟區內,是中國領土,外國無權在蘇岩礁上建築前進基地,更無權在其周邊海域開採石油,霸佔該島礁就是侵犯中國領土主權的完整。

    宏觀來看,朝鮮半島狹小,三面環海,朝鮮人自古就有「北拓精神」,向與中國接壤的北部拓邊移民是擴大疆域的唯一選擇,近代在日據朝鮮時期,朝鮮邊民越界到偽滿洲國吉林一帶開墾,就是一例證;

    那以後,韓國開始向東拓展領域,在日本海與日本爭奪獨島,採取先佔原則,日本居下風,韓國成功開闢了東疆。如今,韓國又開始擴張南疆的領土,強硬而迅速先佔為主。

    從微觀看,韓國想將蘇岩礁築成人工島,而後根據國際海洋法,在中國東海、黃海圈出一塊相當於法國大小的一片海域,屬於韓國,目的是劫掠東海漁業礦產,覬覦海底石油資源。

    中國失去蘇岩礁後海域縮小,大面積海洋國土淪喪,東海和黃海與韓國對半分都分不到,空域也被連帶壓縮,防空識別區拱手讓給韓國。

    漁民丟失漁場,漁業發展受到制約,海軍只能在沿岸近海游弋,成了海岸巡邏隊,最重要的是海底石油財富全給韓國人搶去了。

    HonoH Tron, 你正在写的是这个主题完全无关。请不要在这里浪费时间。

    我同意,中国与俄罗斯的领土问题是重要的,但是这是不是最好的方式来支持你的事业。

I had a tenant in Seoul who was Black. A very large person as well. Chipper as all hell. Thought everybody in Korea was nice as hell, because no one treated her the way that the Metropolitician says she would get treated. I guess she didn’t get the memo.

“I think it would be interesting to see how a white guy dressed in baggy pants, earrings, and tattoos would have been treated by the people walking by?”

Knowing Koreans? Shit, he’d be treated much better than a well-mannered, soft-spoken, clean-shaven black man wearing a suit and tie.

“I think it would also be interesting to see how the Southeast Asian guy would have been treated if he was dressed a bit nicer and spoke clearer English?”

Probably the same, if not worse.

Yes, racism is alive and doing well in Korea..Koreans don’t like black or should I say people of color, if you are not their own “Korean” or “White” you are not liked or really wanted in Korea! It is true and no matter what is said, this is not going to change! This society is breeded for racism to dislike people that do not fit the “white” or “Korean” way! It is easy to see, all you have to do is go to the malls, airport, or places where advertisement takes place and you will see white faces and korean faces everywhere; if you do happen to see a black face the pictures are so degarding that it is insulting! Racism is everywhere in this world which is true, but some places such as Korea has adopted the American way of dealing with “Guemdungees” treat them with hate and indifference, they are not welcomed because of their SKIN COLOR!

Can we all just try to get along? Kushibo has found out that a Starbucks barista recently identified Korean customers with a slant-eyed diagram. This report and comment by Y. Peter Kang at iAmKorean says the customers received gift cards, and the barista was fired.

This article contributes to the stereotype that Southerners are racist.
