By Women in the Army are now going to be allowed to carry a few extra pounds to pass weigh ins:
In a move officials say acknowledges the fact that women come in different body shapes, the Army has raised its weight standards for females across the board.
The new regulations, which went into effect Monday, allow female soldiers to weigh anywhere from six to 19 pounds more than was previously permitted, depending on their height and age.
The standards for the maximum percentage of body fat women soldiers are permitted to carry, however, remain unchanged, according to Army regulation 600-19. [Stars & Stripes]
I actually have no issues with changing the weight standards, but how come it is not being done for men as well? As I have advocated for repeatedly on this blog, I have seen some soldiers who are just stocky which made them overweight, but they have no issue passing a PT test. If a soldier can for example get over a 250 on a PT test and is able to do their job well why kick them out of the military if they are overweight?
If you read the rest of the article the Army is saying they are just catching up to the fact that women come in many different sizes:
Once Army officials concluded that “various females have various shapes and sizes …. We had to redesign and revamp the measuring process,” Timms said, so the updated regulation also changes the places women soldiers are measured.
Instead of using the neck, forearm, wrist and hips, female soldiers are now measured around the neck, waist and hips, Timms said.
The weight standards for men have not been updated, Timms said, and neither has the process for measuring men: They are still measured around the neck and abdominals.
Well don’t men come in different sizes as well?

Well IMHO, the height/weight standards were really designed to make everyone look pretty in their uniforms. The issue that always burned me up was the differing treatment of those who busted this standard. In all the units I was in a male Soldier would come under pressure to come off the tape standard unless he had a NFL-level physique. Taping females (and most of them I saw had to tape) were pretty much left alone.

Still get payed the same as men but the Army ADMITS they are not the equal of men

When I was active duty a lot of female soldiers looked very heavy in uniform, particularly in the posterior. Now they’re are going to allow them to look more heavy? I agree with the view that it is more important if a troop can pass a PT test than meeting an arbitrary weight standard. With the looming defense budget cuts you can be sure that weight, PT test, etc are going to be tightened up so they can cut troops. The reason that the opposite direction is happening in THIS case is because it involves FEMALE troops. I read an article yesterday on the internet that said that involuntary separations are coming. This happening with the tensions now involving Iran & North Korea are just plain stupid.

17, It IS sexist that men be held to a lower standard so that women can appear to be their equal. So I agree with you.
It IS sexist that a Board appearance for a woman is not the same as a Board appearance for a man.
It IS sexist that women are allowed a dress code LESS equal than a man.
It IS sexist that women can say they a “female problem” to get out of an exercise, work detail, ect. fill in the blank.
It IS sexist that a woman can call rape when she feels like it or harassment as it suits her.
