North Korea To Send 49 Athletes To the London Olympics

How come I think North Korea’s boasting about winning a record number of medals during the London Olympics is about as likely to happen as them actually putting a satellite into orbit?

North Korea said Friday it would send 49 athletes to compete in 11 sports in this summer’s London Olympics and is seeking a record number of medals.

The country “aims to clinch more medals than before in the upcoming London Olympics”, the state news agency quoted an unidentified sports expert as saying.

The North is pinning its hopes especially on weightlifting and wrestling while women’s football is also hopeful, the expert said.

The agency said the 35 women and 14 men who had qualified for the Games would also compete in the marathon and table tennis among other sports.

At the Beijing Olympics in 2008 the North won two gold, one silver and three bronze medals to finish in 34th place overall. It has competed in eight summer Games and won 41 medals, including 10 golds.

The country will also take part in the Paralympics, making its debut at the tournament, a pro-Pyongyang newspaper said last month.  [AFP]

A “Record” haul of medals is anytime you win more than you did last time.

I did a race last year, then again this year, and I took 18:45 off of my time.
A New Record! Well, no crap. I’d be disappointed if my time was worse and I didn’t have a problem (such as a flat, or broken equipment) along the way. But I’m still 20+ minutes out of the lead, and even more against Olympic or Pro level athletes.

What I always wonder is how much security North Korea provides to keep their athletes from “wandering off…” Sometimes I wonder how they keep their Security Forces from wandering off as well.

What I found most interesting is when it was first reported about them joining the Paralympics a while back. Considering the few reports out there of how physical disabilities are treated up there, I have to wonder just how long these athletes have been handicapped and how they got that way. Sad, but I could easily imagine the Norks trying to pull a Cartman, especially if they could get a Shakey’s Pizza gift certificate out of it.

    2. Interesting thought…

Anyway, the threat of a gulag and/or a bullet in the back of the head are powerful motivators. If only Jerry Glanville had had such tools at his disposal…

I wonder what happened to the NK soccer coach when NK lost a big match in the world cup. The East Germans, the Soviets, & now the Red Chinese are able to crank out Olympic Gold Medalists like condoms at a whorehouse but the NK aren’t able to do it. There are a lot of things that they can’t do. It cracks me up when I think about the Ryungyong (I might have the spelling wrong) hotel in Pyongyang that had poor quality concrete & even elevator shafts that weren’t straight. Somehow I think that the NK aren’t going to have a stellar record at the London Olympics.
