Picture of the Day: Bundang, South Korea Mega-Church

Via Global Voices comes these pictures of a $80 million mega-church located in Bundang, South Korea just south of Seoul that has to be the most extravagant church I have ever seen:

I miss churches that look like churches. I’d take Pundang’s St John’s Cathedral over this one, but even that house of worship has a Sleeping Beauty’s Castle look to it.

Didn’t Jesus give his sermons on the side of a mountain? Or was that Mithras, anyway, the army is hurting on money and they just completed a giant stone cathedral on Camp Casey… God can’t hear you if you pray in a multi-use facility? Say a gym or chow hall?

In the meantime, the AC is still not on in many parts of Casey to save money. Please pray for me.

Now here’s an awesome church, St Peter’s Basilica. It’s not in Korea, but Koreans are welcome to worship there.

A monument to stupidity. I hope it is built well. Maybe in 2000 years or so people will visit it like they do the pantheon and snicker and wonder about the silly adherents who built it. Just another chapter in the world’s forgotten mythologies book.

What kind of personality leads that cult?
    Ouch, I have an eyesore!

The Pantheon is one of the most important buildings remaining from ancient Rome, and it’s still in use as a church. Here’s the Wikipedia article.

I’m much too nice a guy to “snicker and wonder about the silly adherents who built it.”

Nothing compared to the mega mosque they were building in Iraq.

Another big American style church. No surprise that creationism is apparently starting to get big here.

This isn’t new construction or anything – been here for at least the last 10 years or so…

    7. The Christian church didn’t just take over pagan buildings. The whole religion is built on top of relgions that came before, so it’s fitting they took over the pantheon.

/I meant to add, there is truly nothing new under the sun.
