Via a Open Thread reader tip comes news that a US soldier is being held at Joint Base Lewis-McChord for allegedly murdering his wife:
The Army is investigating a death that occurred early Saturday at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
The News Tribune was contacted Sunday by members of a family who said the death was the result of a soldier fatally stabbing his wife.
A woman who identified herself as the victim’s mother said her daughter was in her late 30s and lived on base with her husband and their four children.
Lt. Col. Gary Dangerfield said Sunday that the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division began investigating a death on the base Saturday.
He would not confirm whether that’s where the death occurred and declined to release further details. The Criminal Investigation Division did not return messages from The News Tribune on Sunday.
The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office could not confirm the death, saying a killing on the base would be out of its jurisdiction.
KOMO-TV reported that base residents had told its reporter that a soldier had stabbed his wife to death. KOMO said base officials declined to comment on the report. [News Tribune]
You can read more at the link, but in the comments section there are of course the typical nitwits making claims the Army is trying to cover up this murder because of out of control kill-hardened troops on the rampage. People making this claim are of course oblivious to the fact that JBLM is literally the size of a small city since the base has more than 34,000 soldiers plus 29,00 more family members living both on and off post. The last murder that happened at JBLM was in 2009 when a civilian brought a gun on post and murdered a civilian employee.
The bottom line is that in a population as big as JBLM with a high number of males there is going to be violent crime from time to time, but as statistics show JBLM is not out of control as so many in the media have been claiming over the past year.
