China Unhappy After Korean Coast Guard Kills Chinese Pirate

in: China

I guess the Chinese government would prefer that Korean Coast Guard personnel was killed by this idiot attacking him instead:

Members of the Coast Guard yesterday take Chinese fishermen caught illegally fishing in Korean waters to their West Regional Headquarters in Mokpo, South Jeolla. One of them was allegedly fatally shot by a rubber bullet fired by a coastguardsman in a confrontation Tuesday. [NEWSIS]

Diplomatic tension is expected to rise between Seoul and Beijing following a clash in Korean waters Tuesday that left one Chinese fisherman dead after he was shot in the chest with a rubber bullet by a Korean Coast Guard officer on an illegal fishing raid.

According to the Coast Guard yesterday, at around 3:10 p.m. Tuesday, around 30 Chinese fishing vessels were spotted on the Korean side of the Exclusive Economic Zone in the Yellow Sea about 90 kilometers (56 miles) northwest of Hong Island in Sinan County, South Jeolla.

After confirming the illegal crossing, the Coast Guard in nearby Mokpo dispatched a patrol ship. As the Korean boat approached the vessels, Chinese fishermen reportedly fought off the raid with lances, hacksaws and knives.

Threatened, a Coast Guard officer fired five rounds of rubber bullets. The final round hit a 44-year-old Chinese fisherman surnamed Jang on the left side of his chest.

Based on a five-minute video of the incident, the Coast Guard confirmed yesterday that Jang was swinging a saw when he was shot. The video was taken by a Coast Guard officer on the patrol ship.  [Joong Ang Ilbo]

For those new to this issue, Chinese fishermen routinely violate Korean territorial waters and attack Korean Coast Guard personnel.  There has been multiple incidents of Korean Coast Guard personnel murdered by these fishermen who are essentially become modern day Yellow Sea pirates.  Despite the Korean complaints the Chinese government does nothing and is complicit in the illegal activity.

In other Korean Coast Guard news, three Coast Guard personnel were also killed recently during the rescue of a Malaysian ship off of Cheju.

Had to shoot him five times? Man, the guy had murderous intent if he kept coming with a saw until he died from repeated rubber bullet shots.

Well… I can tell you how Obama is related to all this. Obama is an American and Americans are mad because China and Korea are cooperating with each on how to resolve this problem.

    http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2012/10/117_122615.html

Americans don’t want Asian countries to cooperate because they can divide and conquer and make themselves look better when they’re really not at all.

As my ex used to say, “Tom, are you on crack?”

China and Korea are not cooperating. Cooperation does not look like Chinese boats invading Korean waters and then Korean fishermen killing or trying to kill Korean Coast Guardsmen.

The US is not “dividing” Asian countries. China is doing that all on its own.

China has promised to cooperate with South Korea in reducing the fishing boats. Read the article Kushibo. If you can read that is…

I don’t know why Tom is so against Americans. After all, since WW2 and Korean War, there wasn’t a major war among the belligerents of previous two wars. It’s 67 years and 59 years since the two wars ended.

I think the U.S. had a lot to do with it. Chinese should just concentrate on its trades and making money for its billion plus people.

The KCG said since the incident, not a single Chinese vessel has been seen in EEZ of the area, where an average of 20 to 30 boats used to operate illegally.

    Mao said it best:

Again, are you on crack? The article is mainly focused on South Korea’s anger and reaction at what has happened.

And even if China does promise to cooperate, we all know from reading recent and past history that we cannot trust anything that Beijing says on this.

China is a bully nation that is trying to whip its former satellite vassal states into line. It’s lashing out at those countries that no longer want to be under its thumb. Beijing has no sense of diplomacy in a democratic world. It thinks that if it throws money out for poor countries or tries to bully richer countries, it will get its way.

And, as I wrote here, China is very likely to use incidents like this to rile up the Chinese Netizenry and other citizenry.

#15, Kushibo what don’t you understand? The news clearly states that

“Korea and Chinese authorities plan to impose a permanent ban on owners of boats that are caught illegally fishing in each other’s exclusive economic zones (EEZ).”

Sounds like China is saying they will cooperate with S.Korea to me.

I just want to say that I just read that a military court has ruled that “Major” Nidal Hasan MUST SHAVE! The court rejected his lawyer’s claim that this violated a federal law guaranteeing religious liberty since it pointed out that he has been a Muslim for over 20 years & had followed military grooming regulations. It said that by his not following military grooming regulations that it put him in a bad light since he was on trial.

China has conducted naval exercises in the East China Sea. Al Jazeera has a brief report with video. One purpose: to prevent interference with its patrol vessels.

    19. Yep. Another example of why we need to keep religion out of politics and the military. Of course, since he’s a dirty muslim, we can pick on him freely.

/I’m hoping, not praying, he gets the death penalty.

Piracy has fallen to 2008 levels; Katie Hunt reports for CNN. Another Obama/Clinton foreign policy success.
