PSY Has Reportedly Made $7.9 Million From “Gangnam Style” Fame

Interestingly very little money for PSY’s hit song “Gangnam Style” is coming from South Korea with the vast majority of his money coming from abroad:

“Gangnam Style” has been very good to Psy. The South Korean rapper’s earnings are reportedly in the $8 million ballpark, according to the Toronto Star.

Although Psy has made a small fortune off the catchy tune and its peculiar dance, not much of the money came from South Korea or Asia. In fact, the rapper only made around $60,000 from online sales in his native country.

The Seattle Times reports that Psy and YG Entertainment have earned around $870,000 from ads displayed on his YouTube channel. The “Gangnam Style” video, which has roughly 880 million views, recently became the most watched clip ever uploaded to the popular website.

On the digital sales front, the song has been downloaded roughly 2.1 million times from iTunes. Nielsen SoundScan states that “Gangnam Style” continues to be an exceptionally strong performer months after its release. If calculations are correct, Psy and company stand to make around $2.4 million from digital downloads alone.

Additionally, the South Korean rapper will reportedly make a tidy sum of money from television commercials. Psy is currently lending his face and song to a Samsung refrigerator and a brand of noodles.  [Inquisitr.com]

You can read the rest at the link, but I would figure that PSY is going to make plenty of money in South Korea from endorsement deals so I think the $60,000 number is deceiving.  Due to the pirating of music in South Korea he is probably happy to make that much in music sales.  However, it would be interesting to see how much money PSY has made from the US considering he was recently exposed as participating in anti-American protests in South Korea a few years ago.

 it’s not the piracy that’s the reason for low profit for Psy in Korea. It’s the fact that average profit made by Korean artists for every $1 dollar worth of downloads is about a penny. Korean performers don’t make much through music sale because Koreans don’t buy DVD disks as Americans do – Koreans think that’s retarded. Koreans prefer digital downloads, and Apple doesn’t even have Korean iTunes. Korean performers make their money through appearance on TV game shows, commercials, endorsements, and concerts. Since Psy hasn’t done any of those things for Gangnam Style in Korea, he hasn’t made much in Korea.

Psy again? Can`t we just move on and focus on something more relevant? …
GI Korea, you are just proving to be a cheap anti-korea agitator here ….. Life in Marmot is moving on …..
Now if you want to keep revolving around this issue ad aeternum I would like to suggest you to visit The Korean`s FB page to read a very interesting article he found out in The Guardian.
I wonder can you do the same here? I mean, bring the article to your blog for discussion? You know, freedom, democracy, etc ….

Tom once again proves that he doesn’t have a clue about what’s happening in Korea. Since the “Gangnam Style” release – PSY has done commercials, endorsements, and concerts in Korea.

The $7.9 million figure is some kind of net. What he will actually profit is much less, unless he wrote the song then he’ll make more. But it gives him the opportunity to tour, which means concert revenue, and sponsorships. Plus, it creates name recognition so he should be set up for another big hit song. That’s unless he does something stupid, right?

10- Surely by now you’ve realised he’s got no intention of building name appeal. Psy is clearly bright enough to know he’s a one-hit wonder abroad, and is happily playing along. Why else keep milking Gangnam Style to the death instead of pushing his other work? I hold a decent amount of respect for him because of this; there was no “sell-out” moment, he’s been unabashedly chasing the money from the get go. Also, I do believe he did write the song, or at least had enough creative input to be deemed a co-writer. He’s with a major label in Korea, but seems to be more of a hands-off artist.

Rokdrop.com desperately wants Psy to be an one hit wonder. After all, if Psy makes it with another hit in America, then that means all that they hate about Kpop will come true. This must be stopped before it goes any further. You guys are so fixated on Psy, and Tom right now, it’s not even funny. I mean how many stories about Psy do you want to discuss? I’m here baby, you want to discuss Psy? I’m here.

So when is the name of this blog changing from ROKDROP to PsyDrop?

Seriously, this is getting old. Why in god’s name do people on here care so much? If you like him then great, if not then move on. There is massive killings and severe human rights issues going on 50 miles up the road yet all anyone talks about here is how Psy feels, felt, or might feel about America. Who. Gives. A. Shit?

My thoughts? I have no thoughts on Japanese women. My preference is squarely Korean women. No comment on Japanese women, just I don’t think about them because I don’t care. Does that answer your question?
