US Sailors Christopher Browning and Skyler Dozierwalker Convicted and Sentenced for Rape of Okinawa Woman

The sailors who were accused of raping a Japanese woman on Okinawa have confessed and have been sentenced for their crime:

NAHA, Okinawa — Two U.S. sailors were sentenced to prison Friday for gang-raping and robbing an Okinawan woman outside her apartment building.

Seaman Christopher Browning, 24, received 10 years on charges of gang rape and robbery. Petty Officer 3rd Class Skyler Dozierwalker, 23, was sentenced to nine years for gang rape.

“I felt like a monster” while listening to details of the rape, Dozierwalker testified this week.

Both men pleaded guilty in a Japanese court earlier this week. They were on a short deployment to Okinawa from their duty station at Naval Air Station Fort Worth in Texas when they assaulted the woman Oct. 16 near Kadena Air Base.

The case prompted a Japan-wide curfew for servicemembers and angered Okinawans, many of whom have harbored ill feelings toward the U.S. military since a 1995 incident in which three servicemembers abducted and raped a 12-year-old girl.

The victim was walking home from work early in the morning when the two sailors spoke to her in broken Japanese, according to details released at the trial. She ignored them and they followed her to her apartment door. One sailor covered her mouth; the other grabbed her by the legs. They then took her to the parking lot where they repeatedly choked and raped her.

Afterward, the two men went to a bar and bought alcohol with 7,000 yen (about $87) that Browning took from the woman’s bag.

The entire incident was captured by security cameras, and the footage was examined in detail during the two-day trial this week. [Stars and Stripes]

You can read the rest at the link, but it is just amazing how two people like this can just decide to randomly rape someone like this. This is very horrible for the victim and hopefully the sentence provides some sense of justice for her after this. Considering their crime they got off pretty light in my opinion, considering that a US military court once sentenced an NCO convicted of raping a Korean soldier to 30 years in prison.

The after affects of the rape are still being felt in regards to curfews and other regulations put on servicemembers serving in Japan. To add to the restrictions in place is that anything a servicemember does in Japan and especially Okinawa is under a microscope by the media and will be instantly a headline. Ironically these two criminals were not even stationed in Japan, they were there on a short deployment from their duty station in Texas and everyone else in Japan is suffering the consequences of their actions.

This goes to show that the US military recruitment have severely lowered their standards.

Should not be surprised given that a very common (and probably most popular) reason in joining the military is the GI bill.

Should’ve given the dirtbags thirty years. Ten doesn’t cut it but it is longer than what you would get in Korea.

This isn’t entirely relevant, but I think these idiots are reservists. NAS Fort Worth is part of a Joint Reserve Base. By doing a little searching, I found out Browning is from Texas and Dozierwalker from Oklahoma which puts them in range of being in range of Fort Worth to be drilling reservists. So by deciding to be animals they get their 2 week annual training turned into a 9 year stay in a Japanese jail!

Well there’s your local justice; considering criminals get heavier sentances in military courts you’d think prosecuters would try to work it out with the command there to yield prosecution to the UCMJ. Maybe they’re hesitant because they don’t want to appear lazy or they don’t believe trus justice is served by not prosecuting them locally.

In anycase I hope those two have the worst 10 years of their lives.

1- What does the Montgomery G.I. Bill have to do with this in any way? Thugs don’t join the military because they want to go to college.

#4, would make sense why they aren’t in class A uniform at their hearing.

I hope their chain of command is looking at a lot more than curfews!

8: Hard to say. It could be Japanese Courts don’t allow such people to wear uniforms or they are only allowed to wear what they had on when arrested. As to their grooming I think I have an answer. I read a little about the Japanese penal system and it appears their hygiene rules are Spartan by our standards. You get one shower about once a week and highly restricted daily washings at a sink.
