North Korea Makes More Threats Against Guam and Hawaii

» by in: North Korea

North Korea is once again making threats against US bases in Hawaii and Guam:

- North Korea said on Tuesday its strategic rocket and long-range artillery units have been ordered to be combat ready, targeting U.S. military bases on Guam, Hawaii and mainland America after U.S. bombers flew sorties threatening the North.

The order, issued in a statement from the North’s military “supreme command”, marks the latest fiery rhetoric from Pyongyang since the start of joint military drills by U.S. and South Korean forces early this month.

South Korea’s defense ministry said it saw no sign of imminent military action by North Korea.

“From this moment, the Supreme Command of the Korean People’s Army will be putting into combat duty posture No. 1 all field artillery units, including long-range artillery units and strategic rocket units, that will target all enemy objects in U.S. invasionary bases on its mainland, Hawaii and Guam,” the North’s KCNA news agency said.

The North previously threatened nuclear attack on the United States and South Korea, although it is not believed to have the capability to hit the continental United States with an atomic weapon. But the U.S. military’s bases in the Pacific area are in range of its medium-range missiles.  [Reuters]

Maybe Reuters can tell me what medium to intermediate range missile the North Koreans have tested that proves they can hit Guam or Hawaii?  Its a rhetorical question because the North Koreans have never tested an intermediate range missile.  They have repeatedly tested their shorter range missiles that can target the ROK and Japan and they had one successful Taepodong-2 test this year that put a non-functional satellite into a tumbling orbit.  However, their Taepodong-2 has a long ways to go before it becomes a reliable ICBM threat because despite their claims it is doubtful they have miniaturized their nuclear technology to fit in warhead or developed effective heat shielding to protect the warhead even if they did.

So basically what is happening is that the ongoing Key Resolve exercise that included a B-52 flyby has caused the North Koreans to feel they have to respond in some way.  They know that if they commit a provocation right now the ROK military is just waiting to smack them down and thus it would be a military embarrassment for the Kim regime.  Thus this leaves them with making these threats they have not proven they can even deliver on.  The media never calls them on it and they make the big headlines they intended to make in response to the exercise.

Unless they’re suicidal, I really don’t see this as much than simple “frontin”, as they say.

The non-functional satellite is tumbling in orbit. It’s not in a tumbling orbit, whatever that would be.

To be fair, we also expect the media to always genuflect and go with any declarations from the ‘commander on the ground.’ So when general Thurman makes comments about how “vulnerable” we are to North Korean long range missiles, what do we expect them to say?

Yes, it’s one thing to launch a missile and drop something into orbit, it’s another to have a controlled re-entry.

You really think could hit Guam? Range Guam maybe, but Guam is small and not sure the nK missiles are that accurate…they shot at the NWI and half the rockets went into the sea, and that is within visual range.

I’m not getting annoyed at the annoying N Korean PR pieces.

I’m MORE annoyed at the Main stream media who keep repeating what they are hearing. Don’t they know they are being U S E D?

That would be cool if they did it. First off, NorK rockets are likely not very accurate so they’ll land in areas populated by vermin (Hawaii and Guam voters went for Obama in the 70% range) rather than service members.

    Bring it on!

The Fatmans propaganda has telegraphed their intentions and now is the time for North Korea to be dealt with!
