Via the Marmot’s Hole comes news that the ROK military is reportedly threatening to destroy various Kim Il-sung statues in North Korea in response to any provocation:
Quoting a government source, the Chosun Ilbo is reporting that the South Korean military is laying plans to launch surgical strikes using air-to-surface or surface-to-surface missiles on statues of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il in major North Korea cities should the North launch another major provocation like the Cheonan sinking or the Yeonpyeongdo shelling.
The South apparently feels the psychological shock this would have on the North Korean regime and North Korean residents would be enough to prevent further provocations. [Marmot's Hole]
You can read the rest at the link, but it would be very interesting to see if the ROK military makes good on such a threat because targeting such statues in a major North Korean city could cause the North Koreans to escalate whatever their initial provocation was in response. There is just no way I see the Kim regime not responding to the destruction of an important part of their propaganda apparatus. Now if they can get someone inside North Korea to blow up the statues covertly like North Korea has accused them in the past of doing then that would be even more effective because it would give the ROK plausible deniability and show that there is internal decent against the Kim regime. If the ROK responds to a provocation by just killing a few North Korean soldiers in response the regime could care less. Destroying these statues covertly would send a message. Yes this would be very hard, but could you imagine the psychological impact to the Kim regime of such an attack if it was captured on video and distributed around the world to the media?
