South Korea Threatens To Destroy Kim Regime Statues In Reponse To A North Korean Provocation

» by in: North Korea

Image via the Telegraph.

Via the Marmot’s Hole comes news that the ROK military is reportedly threatening to destroy various Kim Il-sung statues in North Korea in response to any provocation:

Quoting a government source, the Chosun Ilbo is reporting that the South Korean military is laying plans to launch surgical strikes using air-to-surface or surface-to-surface missiles on statues of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il in major North Korea cities should the North launch another major provocation like the Cheonan sinking or the Yeonpyeongdo shelling.

The South apparently feels the psychological shock this would have on the North Korean regime and North Korean residents would be enough to prevent further provocations.  [Marmot's Hole]

You can read the rest at the link, but it would be very interesting to see if the ROK military makes good on such a threat because targeting such statues in a major North Korean city could cause the North Koreans to escalate whatever their initial provocation was in response.  There is just no way I see the Kim regime not responding to the destruction of an important part of their propaganda apparatus.  Now if they can get someone inside North Korea to blow up the statues covertly like North Korea has accused them in the past of doing then that would be even more effective because it would give the ROK plausible deniability and show that there is internal decent against the Kim regime.  If the ROK responds to a provocation by just killing a few North Korean soldiers in response the regime could care less. Destroying these statues covertly would send a message.  Yes this would be very hard, but could you imagine the psychological impact to the Kim regime of such an attack if it was captured on video and distributed around the world to the media?

Plausible deniability would be counter-productive. The idea should be: dear northern brothers, we can hit you wherever and whenever we want. Hitting their stupid statues would be non-lethal but painful.

Not a bad idea. Better to destroy statues than human lives.

Hit that big one right in the capital. Make sure it falls on the Dunkin Donuts. That’ll hit the obese one right where it hurts.

    To GI Korea.
I think we can use Google Earth to confirm destroyed statues, especially since they are so big. But it would be nice to get footage of camera IN the missiles as they knock out the statues.

For those non-Korean watchers (or casual ones), images/statues/etc of the dear leader of N Korea is VERY very important. When N Korea sent ‘cheerleaders’ for the World Cup to Seoul to join in the celebration 10 years ago, the reporters accompanying them witnessed a funny scene.

The female cheerleaders by chance saw a S Korean newspaper laying on the ground and it had a picture of the dear leader of Kim of N Korea. It was wet and dirty from rain. What did they proceed to do? They started crying (while hugging the wet newspaper) for seeing such a defiling of the dear leader is unthinkable.

So yeah, talk of destroying statues may sound weird to non-Korea watchers, but it’s a BIG deal for N Koreans.

It may br a better idea to surgically strike the tower of juche. The south ought override the airwaves during kcna nightly news and tell the populace that the tower of juche will be decomossioned at a specific time the following day. then at the time use precise satellite guided missiles to do the deed. this will stun the dprk military by showing how advanced
ROK technology is compared to them

The South Koreans finally aren’t whimpering before the North Koreans & are acting like they have some balls. If this happens as a result of a NK provocation this would totally destroy the legitimacy of Kim Jong-un. A listener in comment #10 had a good idea about destroying the tower of Juche. I would add to destroy that huge NK flag just north of the DMZ.

A brilliant idea. Destroying those statues. Why didn’t I think of that?
