North Korea Proposes Talks With US, Will US Fall For This?

» by in: North Korea

I cannot imagine the White House could possibly fall for this ploy from North Korea:

Seoul, South Korea (CNN) – North Korea proposed high-level talks with the United States to “ease tensions in the Korean Peninsula,” its state news agency reported early Sunday.

The topics that “can be sincerely discussed” include easing military tensions, changing a truce treaty to a peace treaty and nuclear matters, according to a statement from the North’s National Defense Commission, as reported by the state-run Korean Central News Agency. It left some details — like where and when the talks might be held — up to Washington, and insisted U.S. officials should not lay out any preconditions for talks.

“(The United States should) not lose the opportunity that is laid out and should actively agree with our resolute step and good intention,” the commission said. [CNN]

The North Koreans would love nothing more than direct negotiations with the US because it validates their propaganda that the ROK is a puppet state of the US. They have also long wanted to get a peace treaty signed with the US as part of their overall strategy to separate the US from the ROK.

The Norks are leaving the choice of venue up to us. What if we say, “OK, let’s meet in the office of the President of the Republic of Korea.” Of course, we’d have to work that out with her in advance.

It’s simple they are coming to the US to get food, oil, hard cash whatever they can or they’ll rattle the sabre again…since our current administration’s foreign policy is not strong, I can’t blame them.

    U.S. responds
“The United States will discuss the new offer in meetings with Japan and South Korea in Washington on Tuesday and Wednesday, a senior administration official said.
Washington has been skeptical of any move by Pyongyang for dialogue as it has repeatedly backtracked on deals, the latest in 2012 when it agreed to a missile and nuclear test moratorium, only to fire a rocket weeks later.
“We have always favored dialogue and, in fact, have open lines of communication with the DPRK,” said Caitlin Hayden, spokeswoman for the National Security Council.
“Our desire is to have credible negotiations with the North Koreans, but those talks must involve North Korea living up to its obligations to the world, including compliance with U.N. Security Council Resolutions, and ultimately result in denuclearization,” Hayden said in statement.

“We will judge North Korea by its actions, and not its words and look forward to seeing steps that show North Korea is ready to abide by its commitments and obligations,” she said.

Yea sure the talks, but let’s do the talks on OUR ground. With a HUGE BUFFET call out all the stops chicken, steak, lamb, vegetables rice, etc make it a lunch meeting. Throw up all the fancy and what have you and then CONTROL the meeting. The worst that can happen is N. Korea gets upset says “Shut your pie hole” and goes back home.

Will the US fall for this? No. Seoul and Washington turn a cold shoulder to the NK overture. Shin Hyon-hee reports for the Korea Herald.

    h/t the Marmot’s Hole.

The entire ROK Droppin’ community retains its confidence in President Obama’s wise and skillful policy.
