Korean Farmers Protest FTA Talks With China

At least the farm protesters are being consistent and protesting the Chinese FTA like they did the US FTA with Korea:

Thousands of South Korean farmers and fishermen rallied Tuesday to oppose a potential free trade deal with China as the two countries kicked off a new round of negotiations to tear down trade barriers between two of Asia’s biggest economies.

An estimated 3,200 protesters from across the country attended the rally in front of the BEXCO convention center, a few kilometers from the negotiation venue in this southeastern port city of Busan. The organizers put the number of participants at about 6,000.

Wearing red protest headbands, the demonstrators shouted slogans and pumped clenched fists in the air while holding pickets with signs, such as “Korea-China FTA is the death sentence to Korean farming.”

The demonstrators later marched toward the hotel on Haeundae Beach, where the negotiations were under way. Some of them attempted to enter the venue, but were blocked by riot police. After 90 minutes of standoff with police, the protesters dispersed voluntarily.

Three protesters were briefly detained by police, and there were no serious clashes.

Organizers said they will hold a rally again on Wednesday.  [Yonhap]

They should all band together (grass roots), and run their own corporate version of Farmer’s Market or Trader Joe’s. Hmm, I think that’s how Samsung and Hyundai started off – better products for less…

Don’t like what they sell, then don’t buy it. And who cares what everyone else says?

On the other hand, the FTA does promote Korea-China mutual cooperation and support, and in indirect effect – security.

It doesn’t count as they’re not in Seoul. Not until if/when they protest in Seoul is it the same.

It doesn’t count as they’re not in Seoul. Not until if/when they protest in Seoul is it the same.

I happened to be out driving around downtown Seoul last night at 3am and there were a lot of riot cop buses parked at strategic sites around town. And there were walking cops at Gwanghwamun and other strategic locations – even at that hour of the night.

So the authorities are anticipating trouble in Seoul and are prepared to confront it.
