South Korea Planning to Build High Speed 5G Wireless Network

If the Koreans do build this 5G wireless network it seems like it would make wired Internet service obsolete with such high download speeds:

How much would you pay for instant download ability?

South Korea’s Ministry of Science and Technology announced plans to spend about $1.5 billion to build a national 5G wireless network to be commercially available by 2020. With the new 5G — which would be 1,000 times faster than most 4G LTE networks — users would be able download a full-length, 800-megabyte film in just one second.

Yep, just one second. That’s it. [Yahoo Finance]

To paraphrase an old computer science saying, “All CPUs/networks wait at the same speed.”

In other words, your throughput is only as fast as the slowest part of your connection. Good luck downloading that 800 MB movie in one second unless it’s being served by a direct connection to another computer on the high speed network.

Sun flare satellite activity is a valid explanation when

Now, if I could only view an 800MB movie in a second, then I could review most of the movies produced since the beginning of film. What an awesome thought. I think my download (in my brain) for information isn’t at that level, kinda like most computers people ownnow. But, heh, maybe in 2020 we will all be outfitted with brainwave caps with this marvelous capability and we will be able to download and upload information from our brains at these supersonic speeds. I’ll just be 88 years young then. See what we have to look forward too!!!

“South Korea‚Äôs Ministry of Science and Technology announced plans to spend about $1.5 billion…”

That’s it, spend more of our taxes on an infrastructure that will profit the chaebols.

Yup. I’m still on 3G because I have unlimited service. It’s slow on my now 2 year-old phone. But, when I use my phone as a wifi hotspot to surf the internet with my laptop, it’s almost as fast as my home connection.
