PBS Documentary Explores ‘Yellow Fever’

May 12th, 2013 at 10:08 pm » Comments (32)

PBS has another interesting documentary that ROK Heads may find of interest. This one explores ‘Yellow Fever’, but really turns into a documentary about a relationship trying to survive culture, language, and age differences between the two people profiled in the film: Steven is an aging white man obsessed with marrying an Asian woman, dreaming of a devoted young wife. Sandy is the young, feisty, ambitious Chinese woman he finds online. This engaging documentary follows their tumultuous love story. For years, twice-divorced airport garage attendant Steven has been writing to

Jonathan WInters

He served in the Marines during World War Two. Jonathan Winters, the wildly inventive actor and comedian who appeared in such films as “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” and “The Loved One” and played Robin Williams’ son on the TV show “Mork & Mindy,” has died. He was 87. Winters died Thursday evening of natural causes at his home in Montecito, California, according to business associate Joe Petro III. Winters was known for his comic irreverence, switching characters the way other people flick on light switches. His routines

Is the US the World’s Duke?

That is what Marc Lynch in this Foreign Policy article believes: Why all the hate? Sure, objectively, Duke appears to represent the best of college sports: graduating most of its players, while running a system built around individual freedom and creativity on offense anchored by hard-nosed, relentless teamwork on defense. But in popular mythology, Duke has become an avatar of an overly white, overrated, and overly praised team with an air of entitled superiority. This national consensus is fascinating, in that it seems utterly blind to what the rest of

Adam Lanza, Violent Video Games, and Mass Killings

February 26th, 2013 at 6:14 pm » Comments (26)

I recently got around to watching the most recent Frontline episode titled “Raising Adam Lanza“.  Like most Frontline shows it was much more informative than anything I have seen from the other news networks about the Newtown, Connecticut killings.  What I found interesting was the reported affects that violent video games had on the killer Adam Lanza.  The police even privately told Frontline that they believed Lanza changed out magazines while shooting the kids like it was a video game.  According to other reports from the same Hartford Courant reporters

If sequestration happens, it will get worse. Two months after completing his five-plus years as an Army medic, Dan Huber is still looking for a job. And while he’s had some promising interviews, he has no assurances the search will end soon. That’s given him some insight that he shares with some of his buddies back at Fort Polk in Louisiana: Don’t wait until you’ve left the military to determine how you’ll make ends meet as a civilian. “I’ve told them: `Hey, man, you guys have really got to start

No word if any bread was on the lorry also. About 27 tonnes of caramelised brown goat cheese – a delicacy known as Brunost – caught light as it was being driven through the Brattli Tunnel at Tysfjord, northern Norway, last week. The fire raged for five days and smouldering toxic gases were slowing the recovery operation, officials said. The tunnel – which is said to be badly damaged – is likely to remain closed for several weeks, they added. ***** The lorry driver had noticed the fire in his

I have never used GPS in my life. Put too much faith in technology and you may wind up in Croatia. A 67-year-old woman from Belgium learned that the hard way after she followed (faulty) directions from her GPS device. The woman only wanted to go about 90 miles from her hometown of Hainault Erquelinnes, Belgium, to pick up a friend at the Brussels train station. Her GPS device sent her about 900 miles to the south before (during the second day of driving) she realized that something was amiss.

Michelle Rhee Featured On PBS’s Frontline Program

January 9th, 2013 at 6:49 pm » Comments (36)

On Tuesday night Korean-American Michelle Rhee who was the Washington, DC school superintendent from 2007-2011 was featured on PBS’s Frontline program. For those that don’t watch PBS, Frontline is one of the best news & documentary programs available on TV. This episode about Michelle Rhee is no different.  You can view the Frontline program The Education of Michelle Rhee at the link. After watching the program I was surprised the level of access that Rhee gave the Frontline camera team. She allowed them to follow her around during her entire

The Stupidest Gun Control Article of the Past Year

Here is the stupidest gun control article I have read in quite sometime: Two rocket launchers turned into the Los Angeles Police Department as part of the city’s gun buyback event appear to be antitank weapons from the military, experts said. Police said the people turning them in at the buyback told officers they had family members who were at one time in the military and “they no longer wanted the launchers in their homes.” Several military experts said one of the weapons was probably a version of the AT4,

What To Do About Gun Violence Open Thread

I figured I would start an Open Thread for everyone to discuss the latest mass shooting in the US that statistically isn’t the worse, but feels like the worst since the gunmen killed so many little elementary kids.  So if anyone has ideas on what should be done please share them in the comments section. Here are my thoughts on what I think should be done. The media so far seems to be grabbing on to the take the guns away argument which is about as useful as USFK and
