Marmot’s Hole Recognized for 10 Years of Blogging About Korea

March 26th, 2013 at 7:16 pm » Comments (23)

I would be remiss if I did not wish Robert Koehler of the Marmot’s Hole a happy 10 year anniversary of blogging.  The Joong Ang Ilbo took notice of this anniversary and has an article featuring Robert as well as two other well known bloggers: “What do you do in Seoul?” “Oh, I blog.” So goes the response of a few lucky expat souls. To write about what you want, when you want, from the comfort of your own home, while also making money is a dream shared by many

How to Contribute To ROK Drop

One of the options I added recently to the ROK Drop is the registration option visible on the sidebar above the recent comments widget.  This registration option allows readers to add their own contributions to ROK Drop.  I decided to add this feature due to the frequent reader tip e-mails I receive along with various comments asking why I did not post on something.  I have had e-mails accusing me of trying to cover up for USFK or having certain political leanings because I did not publish something or even

As most people have probably noticed, the ROK Drop has been undergoing a theme update today.  Part of the theme update is the installation of the Disqus comment system.  Old comments are still being uploaded into the Disqus servers and setup continues.  Hopefully tomorrow everything will be configured and up and running.  I decided to install Disqus because it will allow readers to edit their comments for those who register for a Disqus account.  Comment editing has been a long time complaint by readers so hopefully this update will address

I recently updated WordPress and some of the plugins that power this blog and my current WordPress theme is having some compatibility issues with the upgrades, especially with the new commenting system.  I will try and work on fixing the theme today when I get time.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

If The Korean Internet Wasn’t So Restrictive Would We Have Never Heard of Mark Zuckerberg?

This Korean-American blogger does make a good point about how Cyworld was way ahead of its time and wasn’t allow to reach its full potential because of the restrictive nature of the Korean Internet: David Hwang is the founder of a blog called HwangC. He says while the Korean Internet can be light-years ahead of other countries, it is still light-years behind when it comes to how well it adapts to the global market.  ”When Cyworld was at its peak, nobody had ever heard of Friendster, Myspace, Twitter, or Facebook,”

Some Thoughts On How Much Big Blogs Impact K-Blogs

With the recent passing of Kim Jong-il I have had a number of blogs link back to this site due to the amount of content and information I have available about Kim Jong-il.  I always appreciate being linked to by other bloggers to include the big bloggers out there, but what I find interesting is that links from the big bloggers does not necessarily mean a lot of page views compared to links from K-blogs.  For example Andrew Sullivan is a big blogger that linked to my opinion piece about

Congrats to the hand full of K-bloggers who had the opportunity to meet Korean President Lee Myung-bak during their attendance at a World Friends Korea event at the Blue House: Michael Hurt took a number of pictures of the event that can be viewed here.  More about this event can be read over at the Marmot’s Hole and Roboseyo as well. I have done the Blue House tour before and it really is quite a nice facility to visit and definitely a place fitting for a head of state.  Information

Intense Debate Comment System Installed, Let Me Know What You Think

Many of you may have noticed that I installed the Intense Debate comment system today.  I am trying this out to see if I.D. reduce the amount of bandwidth the ROK Drop uses while providing more comment features for the ROK Head community.  My site uses huge amounts of bandwidth due to the number of comments the site receives, which costs money.  By hosting the comments on Intense Debate I will be using their bandwidth to load the comments instead of from the server that I use to host this

The daughter of Amy Chua who recently made big headlines and even bigger criticism with her Asian inspired parenting techniques, has decided to speak out about her mom by starting a blog: America’s best-known “Tiger Mother,” Yale Law Professor Amy Chua, may soon face some literary competition from her daughter. High school senior Sophia Chua-Rubenfeld, who along with her younger sister is featured in their mother’s book advocating an intensely strict mode of parenting, started a blog earlier this month called “New Tiger in Town,” where she sounds off on

ROK Drop Featured In 10 Magazine

I would like to thank 10 Magazine for the profile they did on the ROK Drop blog for their April issue. Like stated in the article I hope this site gives a different perspective on Korea and military related issues from a person who is actually in the military. However, I am puzzled though on why I am considered conservative in the article?  I really have no fixed ideology other than informing myself on issues before making firm opinions on them.  Nothing frustrates me more than to see all the
