The more I read about the whole education reform agenda pushed by former DC school superintendent Michelle Rhee the more the reform agenda reminds me of what has happened with the US military’s GI Bill and tuition assistance programs.  Over the past decade the for profit schools have made huge money from these military educational initiative as well as other government programs to fund education while providing minimum educational outcomes for the cost.  I have personally seen servicemembers complete bachelor degrees in under a year and master’s degree programs in

US Government Announces Reforms To GI Bill Benefits

It is about time that the US government began to crackdown on shady schools competing for GI Bill and tuition assistance money from the US military: Concerned about deceptive marketing practices that cheat veterans out of their GI Bill benefits, President Barack Obama on Friday signed an executive order aimed at marginalizing colleges with poor graduation rates and demanding better college comparison information for all student veterans. The new GI Bill is on the verge of being signed into law by President Bush after months of political theater by the Democrats holding it up in order to claim John McCain doesn’t care about veterans.  With the political theater over a compromise bill that includes elements from both the Democrat and Republican plans has been ironed out that will significantly improve education benefits for US servicemembers.
