Here is an excerpt of what he has been doing this month from his blog: I know I usually stick to one topic in each blog post, but so much has happened in last couple of weeks that I wanted to tell you about it all! This year is quite an important one as 2013 marks the 60th anniversary since South Korea and the U.S. signed the mutual defense treaty.  To honor the occasion I hosted a special 60th Anniversary U.S.-Korea Alliance dinner at my residence.  We brought together key

USFK Commander Says US Forces Are Vulnerable In Korea

January 25th, 2013 at 7:03 am » Comments (17)

I think the USFK Commander needs to articulate his words a little better because his recent statement in the Stars & Stripes just doesn’t sound right: The top U.S. military commander in South Korea said this week that he worries about another North Korean provocation, and that U.S. forces are in a period of “high vulnerability” following Pyongyang’s test of a long-range rocket last month. “I’m not trying to frighten anybody, but that’s the deal,” U.S. Forces Korea commander Gen. James Thurman said during a community briefing at U.S. Army

For anyone that hasn’t served in the US military due to the use of acronyms it truly is a different language with different dialects depending on where you are stationed.  General Thurman obviously isn’t fluent in the Korean dialect yet: Gen. James Thurman, the new U.S. Forces Korea commander, is cracking down on acronyms. “Don’t assume I know everything” and “No acronyms” were on a list of top 10 instructions he sent out Thursday. This order seeks to clamp down on rampant use of alphabet soup in the U.S. Army.

General Thurman continues to get around and see the battlespace he is now responsible for defending: Gen. James Thurman, the new commander of the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK), will visit Yeonpyeong Island, the site of North Korea’s deadly artillery attack last year, a USFK officer said Thursday. “Gen. Thurman is scheduled to visit Yeonpyeong Island today,” the officer said asking for anonymity. He noted that Thurman will be briefed on recent movements by North Korean forces and on South Korean Marines’ defense posture. On Nov. 23, 2010, North Korea unleashed

It looks like there will be a change of command coming up later this year for USFK: Gen. James Thurman has been nominated to replace Gen. Walter Sharp at the helm of U.S. Forces Korea, Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced on Tuesday. Sharp, who will retire at the end of his tenure in South Korea, has led USFK since replacing Gen. B.B. Bell in June 2008.  [Stars & Stripes] You can read more about General Thurman at the link or view his Wikipedia page here.
