It has been a long time coming but the South Koreans have finally launched their Naro-1 rocket: South Korea successfully launched its first-ever space rocket Wednesday, the country’s science minister said, with the satellite carried by the rocket also believed to have entered its intended orbit. Whether the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1 (KSLV-1), also known as Naro, has successfully deployed its payload satellite will be determined early Thursday (local time), Lee Ju-ho, minister of education, science and technology, told a press conference. “At 4 p.m. today, the Naro was successfully

I wish the South Koreans good luck with their latest rocket launch: South Korea is expected to try again to launch its space rocket later this month after successfully conducting experiments to check if all systems are working properly, a government source said Sunday. The official said South Korean and Russian researchers are expected to discuss results of repairs made to the rocket late last year and touch on the present state of the Naro-1 rocket. He added Seoul successfully carried out combustion tests on the kick motor on the

It looks like the South Koreans may this month finally launch their long developed rocket: Korea’s plan to launch a space rocket will likely be delayed further, government officials said yesterday, as the Russian replacement for a defective part in the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1 (KSLV-1) is not expected to arrive here until the end of the week. The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and its Launch Preparation Committee said earlier the launch of the KSLV-1 would take place before Nov. 24. This just goes to show how difficult it is to have a successful space program: Korea canceled the launch of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1, or the Naro rocket, on Friday after detecting a gas leak in the helium injection system. Officials of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and Korea Aerospace Research Institute said that it would have to postpone the launch by at least three days until engineers and researchers fixed the problem. Korea has until the end of this month to launch the Naro rocket. Otherwise,

The Naro-1 rocket after many delays has finally lifted off from South Korea’s space center, but not everything has gone as planned: South Korea‘s first rocket blasted off into space Tuesday following an aborted attempt last week and just months after its rival North Korea drew international ire for its own launch. A problem quickly surfaced, however, when space officials said that an initial investigation showed that the satellite the rocket was carrying apparently failed to enter its intended orbit. Science and Education Minister Ahn Byong-man told reporters that South

“We’ve been developing the launch vehicle since 2002. We really worked at it for a long time, but success or failure is determined within 10 minutes at most. I may also feel a kind of empty feeling after the launch. They said that in other countries, they even cry. It’s probably that they‘re so moved rather than a feeling of emptiness. Right now, I’m not thinking anything, frankly. The only thing in my head right now is the word ‘success.’” These were the feelings described by Dr. Park Jung-joo, head

Once again the South Korean test of a rocket has been postponed and this time at the last minute: South Korea – Space officials aborted South Korea‘s first rocket launch just minutes before liftoff Wednesday. The scheduled launch, just months after North Korea was widely criticized for firing its own rocket in defiance of the United Nations, had threatened to raise Pyongyang‘s ire.
